Roa Wins Santa Maria and Takes Points Lead

Garden Grove, California’s Brody Roa took the lead on lap two and led the rest of the way to win the “Doug Fort Memorial” for the second year in a row last Saturday night at the Santa Maria Raceway.  The victory propelled the veteran racer back into the lead in the USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series point standings heading into this Saturday’s race at Perris Auto Speedway.

Roa began the night by setting fourth fast time in the 18-car field with a lap of 13.785 on the banked third of a mile clay oval.  He began his 10-lap heat race in the fifth spot and drove it to a fourth-place finish.  That finish placed him on the outside of the second row for the 30-lap main event.

Roa got a tremendous start at the drop of the green flag in the main and was up to second by the time the field screamed off turn two on lap one.  He immediately began to stalk the leader.  Coming off the fourth turn on the second lap, he shot to the inside and took the lead away.

Despite three early yellow flags and a late race red, Roa was never headed and at one point had nearly a full straightaway lead.

“This thing runs so good,” the happy winner told the crowd after his fourth victory of the year.  “Shaver builds one heckuva’ an engine.  I am starting to like this place. When we first started coming here a few years ago, I was not a fan of how sticky and rough it is.  Now we have it figured out.”

“We have had, I would not say a bad stretch, but not our greatest the last month and a half,” Roa continued.  “We were trying some stuff on the car.  We went back to the shop this week and went back to what we had been doing and it worked out.  We are headed back to Perris this week and then off to Indiana.”

In posting the win, Roa became the first USAC/CRA regular to pick up two victories in the series this year.  It also allowed him to retake the point lead and he comes into this weekend’s event with a one-point advantage in the championship standings.  Saturday’s race will be a co-sanctioned event with the USAC Southwest Sprint Cars.  In a rare occurrence in racing, Roa will not only be the USAC/CRA point leader, but he will also be the leader in the Southwest Series where he has a 53-point cushion between himself and the second-place driver.

Fans who would like to see Roa in action this week can find Perris Auto Speedway at 18700 Lake Perris Drive in Perris (92571).  The Spectator gates will open at 5:00 P.M. and the first race will take the green flag at 7:00.  The track website is http://perrisautospeedway.com/ and the office phone number is (951) 949-0134.
