Cole Anderson Visits South Carolina Track With His Same Name On Saturday

In slang terms, it’s common to say successful racers should have tracks named for them if they are stout to beat at a facility. For Cole Anderson, he’ll be competing at a track which already shares his name on Saturday night as part of the Racing Brotherhood Foundation Border War 150 at Anderson Motor Speedway in South Carolina. It will be his first career race at the .333-mile facility.

 

After nearly a month off from asphalt super late model racing, Anderson returns to the hardtop with his ATF & Gunslinger team for 150 laps in what is quickly becoming a regional showcase event. Co-sanctioned through the Southern Super Series with the CARS Response Energy Tour, the Border War 150 pits the stars of each series against each other in an all-star caliber field. To state what this event means to racers, this year’s race already has nearly 30 pre-entries from across the east coast, more cars than took the green flag at both series’ most recent events at Bristol Motor Speedway. 

 

In Cole’s last event, he raced a pro late model at the half-mile New Smyrna Speedway to a pair of top five finishes during an event which featured two twin-length races for those cars. The No. 97 Timberwolf Plastics Toyota team rebounded from misfortune early in the night to secure their finishes before each checkered flag. AMS offers a shorter, less intensive layout where patience can be rewarded.

 

“It should be fun this weekend, and hopefully I can get back into the swing of things,” Cole said about the event at the worn-out track in Upstate South Carolina. “I hear you have to be very conservative and save your tires in the race, much like Pensacola and some other places we run well. Hopefully, we can start somewhere decent and just ride most of the race until it’s time to go.”

 

During his off weeks from the pavement, Cole has been racing a dirt modified at tracks around his home in Minnesota. Short 25 and 30-lap features are a far cry from the endurance-style 150-lapper he has in front of him on Saturday night, yet he believes various elements of the dirt modified may help his asphalt effort at AMS.

 

“I’ve never been to AMS, so it will be a new experience to all of us,” he admitted. “If anything, I think the dirt might actually help me with restarts and all. I feel like on dirt you have to get good restarts to drag race to the corner because you’re usually fighting for a lane. On dirt, a lot of restarts are three and four-wide going into the first turn, so you really have to be observant. AMS has a preferred lane on the bottom from what I’ve seen, so it should definitely help us in those scenarios.”

 

The No. 97 ATF & Gunslinger Toyota team will hit the track on Friday evening for open practice and raceday festivities begin at 2pm with two rounds of practice. Time trials hit the speedway at 6pm with driver introductions at 7pm and the green flag at 7:30pm ET.
