Codie Rohrbaugh; Grant County Mulch Racing look for back-to-back top-10s at Pocono

On the heels of his third career top-10 finish last week at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway, Codie Rohrbaugh and his Grant County Mulch Racing team head to Pocono (Pa.) Raceway eyeing back-to-back top-10 performances in Friday afternoon’s General Tire #AnywhereIsPossible 200.

 

After a jagged start to his 2018 ARCA season, Rohrbaugh and his family-owned team came out swinging in their hometown race at Charlotte.

 

After qualifying ninth, Rohrbaugh’s No. 7 Grant County Mulch Chevrolet hovered inside the top-10 during the 100-lap race to race hard to a ninth-place result.  

 

The performance was the team’s first top-10 effort since a career-best eighth place finish at Kansas Speedway last October.

 

Upbeat about their performance, the Petersburg, West Virginia native returns to Pocono Raceway hoping to turn a top-10 run into a top-five performance.

 

“Feels good to have a solid result under us,” said Rohrbaugh. “We had to work hard for our finish at Charlotte. It was a tough race with a stacked field. We learned though. We’re always learning. Mark (Huff, crew chief) made some good calls and we have some confidence heading to Pocono.

 

“That’s a good thing.”

 

Like many ARCA teams expected to compete in Friday’s race, Rohrbaugh will partake in Wednesday’s open test session at the 2.5-mile triangle, where his Mooresville, N.C.-based team hopes to dial in their No. 7 Grant County Mulch Chevrolet in anticipation of his 14th career ARCA start.

 

“We qualified both races inside the top-10, actually had a shot at the pole in the spring before qualifying was timed out,” recalled Rohrbaugh. “The finishes though didn’t work out. We had a fast car – just couldn’t keep up with the adjustments during the race and we ended up with top-12 finishes in both races.

 

“I mean top-12 finishes aren’t bad – but we expect more out of ourselves. Our sponsor Grant County Mulch has put a lot into our team with the anticipation that we can up our game and start competing for wins.

 

“That’s not easy though.

 

“There’s a lot of good teams in ARCA right now. Just like NASCAR, everything’s gotta go right, and you just must put yourself in the right place at the right time to execute. Hopefully, our time is coming, and we can sneak in a win this year. That would be cool.

“I don’t think anyone expects us to win, but I think we can. Just have to keep diggin.” 

With a relaxed approach for competing at Charlotte, Pocono and next weekend at Michigan International Speedway, Rohrbaugh says his team favors their “fly under the radar” style.

 

“I’d like to think when people see show up at the race track, we’re considered a contender,”

 

Rohrbaugh explained. “Maybe not a threat to win the race – but at least someone you’ll have to

challenge for a good finish.

 

“Everyone’s been working hard. We’re off to a good start of this three-week stretch, but we can’t let our guard down. We just have to go to the test – do our thing and then shift our concentration on the race. Hopefully, we’ll come out clean and move on to Michigan.

 

“I’m excited for some of these races we have coming up. Every one of them is an opportunity for us to leave our mark.”

 

In 13 career ARCA starts, Rohrbaugh has a best finish of eighth at Kansas Speedway (October 2017) after starting a career-best eighth at Michigan International Speedway in June 2017.

The General Tire #AnywhereIsPossible 200 (80 laps | 200 miles) is the seventh of 20 races on the 2018 ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards schedule. Practice begins Fri., June 1 with an hour and 25-minute practice session from 10:00 a.m. – 11:25 a.m. General Tire pole qualifying is set for later in the day at 2:00 p.m. The race is set to take the green flag later in the day shortly after 5:45 p.m. The event will be televised live on FOX Sports 2 (FS2), while ARCARacing.com will stream live timing and scoring throughout the entire weekend festivities.
