Multi-Car Melee Derails Career Run for Giovanni Bromante at Southern National

Giovanni Bromante continued to impress on Saturday, laying the groundwork for a career best run at Southern National Motorsports Park before a multi-car melee midway through the event ended his race. Prior to the incident, Bromante had been running as high as second before being forced to retire early.

 

With weather in the forecast for most of the week, Bromante and the David Gilliland Racing team used Friday as a test day to get the 13-year old driver up to speed at the facility. Once the sun rose on Saturday, the chance of rain diminished and Bromante paced the second official practice session of the day ahead of all other competitors.

 

After time trials, Giovanni was second-fastest, placing him on the front row for the first time in his late model career. He followed the leader closely for the first part of the race before the car and track began to change, prompting Giovanni to come to pit road for adjustments. On a restart soon thereafter, Giovanni had climbed his way back to sixth and witnessed a multi-car incident in front of him. Quickly, he mashed the brakes in an effort to stop but the car immediately behind him was unable to slow, shoving Giovanni into the accident.

 

The damage from the crash was enough to end the day early for Bromante who also jammed his thumb in the wheel during the accident.

 

“This weekend was great and we were fast all weekend,” Bromante said after the race. “We qualified great and ran well, we were just in the wrong place at the wrong time and got caught up in a wreck. Still, overall, it was a great weekend and I’m proud of the DGR guys for giving me a great car all weekend.

 

“It’s really hard to text now after I jammed my thumb,” Bromante added, bringing up a way of life for teenagers of today’s generation. “I’ll be fine, but it really hurts and I learned to get my hands out of the wheel in a crash from now on.”

 

Giovanni’s next race with DGR comes on Memorial Day weekend at Montgomery Motor Speedway, the track where he debuted with DGR earlier this season. In that race, a mechanical issue sidelined the teenager after he drove his way into the top ten from starting 23rd.
