Will Kimmel ready to wind up No. 22 Cunningham car at Winchester: Herr’s Potato Chips ARCA 200 June 25-26

On loan from Kimmel Racing, third-generation ARCA racer Will Kimmel knows a bargain when he sees one. When the Sellersburg, Indiana driver got the call to drive the No. 22 Cunningham Motorsports Ford in the upcoming Herr’s Potato Chips ARCA 200 at Winchester Speedway, he didn’t have to think about. Done deal.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Kimmel said. “I love that place. It’s a little quicker version of Salem…a little tighter.”

The last time Kimmel lined up for the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards race at Winchester, it was only a teaser.

“We did a start-and-park last time. Worse part was we were actually really fast without really even trying. We sort of used it as a test session in case we ever got to come back and run hard.”

That time has come for Kimmel, who will get to go full-tilt in the E3 Spark Plugs 22 car with NASCAR champion crew chief Paul Andrews calling the shot from the pit box.

“Really looking forward to working with Paul Andrews… the whole deal…getting to run with Cunningham Motorsports again. I just really appreciate the opportunity. I can’t wait to go to the track and focus on only driving the car.”

Coming back to Cunningham is a bit of a homecoming for Kimmel who drove three races for the organization in 2013. Cunningham Motorsports is a co-ownership between Briggs Cunningham and Kerry Scherer. Current ARCA point leader Chase Briscoe drives the 77 car for Cunningham. Kimmel has played the part of mentor and coach for Briscoe.

“We just never really stopped talking (with Cunningham)…we’ve always had a great relationship. I’ve always gotten along real well with Briggs and Kerry. I’ve tried to help Chase (Briscoe) as much as possible…give him the best information to the best of my knowledge.”

Kimmel understands the importance of racing at Winchester where the history reaches back more than 100 years.

“It used to be that you had to run Winchester, Dayton and Salem to qualify for the Indy 500. Back in the day, you had to run one of those tracks to get cleared to run Indy. There’s so much cool history at Winchester. Everyone wants to win at Winchester. The racing’s great…it’s really fast. I can’t wait. I’m really looking forward to this…I think we’re going to do very well there.”
