Mother Nature Steals Sprintcar Opener’s Thunder Saturday at Meridian Speedway

Meridian Speedway welcomed four open-wheeled divisions to the paved quarter-mile Saturday for the Sprintcar Opener.  The Mountain Dew Winged Sprintcars, CT400 Winged Sprintcars, Pepsi Crate Cars and Peterson Chevrolet Super Sixes joined the full-bodied Teleperformance Claimer Stocks, College of Western Idaho High School Tuners, and TATES Rents Hornet Rookies for a full night of wheel-to-wheel action.  However, Mother Nature had other plans for the evening.

The TATES Rents Hornet Rookies kicked off main event festivities as rain fell on the asphalt quarter-mile.  Kayla Harris was first to find traction and worked her Kim’s Kars racer to the lead before Adam Deane made his way to the top spot on lap two.  As the racing surface dried Deane pulled away from the field in his 2C Auto Sales machine, with Herb Harrod and Jason Morris in tow.  Penalties for Harrod and Morris dropped them to the back of the pack while a caution with five circuits remaining bunched the field for a final restart.

Deane used the low line to shoot in front of Brandon Kelley’s Kelley Rooter racer in turn one.  But both leaders were black flagged with two laps to go, leaving the lead in Josh Randolph’s hands.  Randolph didn’t squander his opportunity and drove to the Caleb’s Chop Shop Victory Circle.

The College of Western Idaho High School Tuners rolled a dozen strong racecars onto a soggy speedway for their 25 lap main event.  Tayvia Morris tiptoed her Northwest Auto Service car to the lead on lap one, but Riley Rogers found grip on the high side and motored to the top spot on lap two.  Deep in the pack Daytona Wurtz and Taylor Occhipinti renewed their heat race rivalry as they battled Peter Woog and Kendra Occhipinti for the remaining spots on the Pepsi-Cola scoreboard.  Wurtz’s All Makes Auto Salvage machine worked best and she took second as Kendra Occhipinti settled into third in her Marv’s Tire Service, Bearclaw Graphics car.

As the rains picked up something had to give, and with ten laps to go the slick racing surface caught second-place Wurtz out in turn one.  Wurtz slapped the concrete hard, but emerged unscathed from her machine.  With track conditions deemed too slick to race on, the rest of the night’s events were canceled.
