TOYOTA USAC: Timms’ Late Charge Scores Lawrenceburg Win in Indiana Midget Week Opener

Ryan Timms started from the 12th position and charged through the field, eventually overtaking fellow Toyota driver Daison Pursley for the lead on lap 27 of 30 to win the USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget Series feature at Lawrenceburg Speedway, on the opening night of 2024 Indiana Midget Week (IMW).

With the victory, Timms becomes the third different Toyota-powered driver to win in the first four USAC events this season joining Pursley and Cannon McIntosh. It’s the 17-year-old’s second consecutive IMW win at Lawrenceburg and his 11th career national midget feature triumph. Earlier this season, he captured top honors in the Xtreme Midget Series event at Farmer City Raceway.

Timms’ Keith Kunz Motorsports teammate Emerson Axsom paced the field for 18 of the first 22 laps, with Pursley and McIntosh running in the top-five for much of the race with Timms eventually moving into the top five on lap 18.

As the laps began to wind down, Pursley would dive under Axsom to take the top spot on lap 23 with Axsom, McIntosh and Timms right behind him as Toyota-powered drivers held down the top four positions.  One lap later, Timms would move past McIntosh for third.

The field would slow for a caution on lap 25 and on the restart, Timms would overtake Axsom for second and then set his sights on the leader. On lap 27, Timms would make a big run on the outside and pass Pursley for the lead down the back straight and drive on to the victory. Pursley would finish second, with Axsom in third and McIntosh placing fourth in earning his fourth consecutive top-five finish to open the USAC season.

Indiana Midget Week continues Thursday night at Lincoln Park Speedway.

Toyota Quotes:

Ryan Timms, Keith Kunz Motorsports: “Up to lap 10 or 15, I really wasn’t going anywhere. I really didn’t think I would end up here in victory lane early on. This is one of my favorite tracks. I can’t believe we were even able to race today. I want to thank the track crew here at Lawrenceburg Speedway for giving us a really good track. It ended up being really good as the race went on. I want to thank Toyota, JBL and everyone at KKM, who just gave me a rocket ship tonight. It feels really good to get this one done.”

Daison Pursley, CB Industries: “It was interesting tonight. It built a curb pretty low down on the track and I don’t remember ever running that hard down low at Lawrenceburg early in the night like that.  I felt like everyone on this Pristine Auction, NOS Energy Drink, Toyota Racing team gave me a great car tonight. Congrats to Ryan and KKM, but hopefully we can keep picking off these podiums. It’s a long week ahead and we’ll see where we end up at the end of the week.”
