Drake Building Confidence On Road Courses

Drivers in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East are going road racing again this week, with a visit to Virginia International Raceway for the Biscuitville 125 on Saturday.

The race on the 2.25-mile track in Alton, Virginia marks the second of two road course events on this year’s series schedule.

Although road racing is fairly new to him, 19-year-old Nick Drake is optimistic of getting a good finish at VIR in the Bill McAnally Racing No. 15 NAPA AUTO PARTS Toyota.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Drake said of the event. “We built a new road course car for this year. The one we ran last year was kind of old and worn out.”

Drake, who finished 12th in last year’s series event at the Virginia road course, acknowledges it was a struggle there as a series rookie a year ago. He anticipates a better performance on this visit, with the new car and with the experience of three road course events under his belt.

“Now I’m more experienced and the cars are where they need to be,” said the Mooresville, North Carolina driver. “We expect to run as good at VIR as we did at Watkins Glen.”

Drake had a strong qualifying run earlier this month at Watkins Glen (New York) International. He was sixth quickest in time trials. After a setback from racing contact early in the event, he came from the back of the pack to finish11th.

Drake is ninth in the championship standings, but still has a shot at making to the top five in points with strong finishes in the final three races remaining on the series schedule. He has one top-five and five top-10 finishes in 11 starts.

The Biscuitville 125, which will be televised on NBCSN on Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. ET, is the 12th event on a 14-race schedule. It marks the third visit by the series to VIR.
