Timms leads Toyota At USAC Sweet Springs

Ryan Timms climbed through the field going from last to second after going to the back of the field after a lap 13 caution to lead Toyota at the USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget Series 40-lap feature Sweet Springs Motorsports Complex, Sunday. It was Timms’ second consecutive runner-up finish after placing second at Belleville on Saturday.

The race saw a heart-breaking finish for Timms’ Keith Kunz Motorsports teammate Kale Drake who led 34 laps before he bounced through turn two on restart while leading with just two laps remaining. He eventually came to a stop atop the cushion. He would eventually place 15th.

Drake wasn’t the only Toyota to see his shot at a victory slip away late as Daison Pursley, Saturday night’s winner at Belleville, was battling with Drake for the lead when he appeared to suffer a shock issue in turn two on lap 38, resulting in a flip resulting in the final caution of the evening. He would immediately climb out of the car uninjured.

Drake and Pursley had fought for the lead for much of the race and had traded the lead just before the yellow as Pursley had gotten by Drake to lead 37, only to see Drake come right back on the following lap.

Logan Seavey would be the beneficiary of the two leaders suffering late issues as he would take the win ahead of Timms, with Toyota-powered drivers capturing four of the top five finishing positions. Jacob Denney would place third, followed by Zach Daum in fourth and Cannon McIntosh in fifth. It was McIntosh’s third consecutive top-five finish to open the season.

The USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget Series returns to the track for the six-race Indiana Midget Week, which kicks off on June 4 at Circle City Raceway in Indianapolis.

Toyota Quotes:

Ryan Timms, Keith Kunz Motorsports: “It was really tight racing in the beginning and after starting 11th, I went for a bomb and a couple of guys checked up in front of me and I ended up having to go to the back of the field. I started passing cars and found the faster line to do it. My car was really good. After the misfortunate with Kale and Daison, we were able to bring it home second. I’m super-stoked to come back after going to the back of the field.”
