FOX NASCAR Bestows Inaugural “The Byrnsie Award” Upon Rodney Childers

FOX NASCAR presented Rodney Childers, Kevin Harvick’s championship-winning crew chief, with the inaugural “The Byrnsie Award” during Sunday’s NASCAR RACEDAY telecast from Sonoma Raceway on FOX Sports 1.

In honor of late FOX NASCAR broadcaster Steve Byrnes, whose nickname was ‘Byrnsie,’ the award was established to celebrate an individual in the NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES who embodies principles Byrnes demonstrated daily in his personal and professional life — preparation, teamwork and family within the garage area.  Childers was voted the recipient by Byrnes’ colleagues on the FOX NASCAR broadcast team, of which he was a member since the first race broadcast in February 2001.  Byrnes passed away in April following a courageous battle with cancer.

“I’m very honored that my dad could have his very own award named after him,” said Bryson Byrnes, Steve Byrnes’ son, on NASCAR RACEDAY in announcing Childers as recipient of The Byrnsie Award.  “I’m very excited to announce that the winner of the first-ever Byrnsie Award goes to Rodney Childers.  Rodney is the crew chief for Kevin Harvick, and so far this season, he’s already led him to two victories and 10 top-five finishes.  But he’s also a great family man.   So I’d like to congratulate Rodney, and I think my dad is very proud of you right now.”

“It’s incredible to hold this (trophy) and to think about Steve and his family and how much he meant to this community and everybody here at the race track,” Childers told FOX NASCAR analyst Larry McReynolds on the NASCAR RACEDAY telecast upon receiving the trophy.  “For somebody to say anything like this to me is incredible, so I appreciate this and everybody at FOX … a great honor.”

Sunday’s NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES race telecast from Sonoma Raceway is FOX Sports’ final Cup Series race of the 2015 season.  FOX Sports continues through the remainder of the year with live, exclusive coverage of the entire NASCAR CAMPING WORLD TRUCK SERIES season.  In addition, NASCAR RACE HUB airs daily on FOX Sports 1, and NASCAR RACEDAY and NASCAR VICTORY LANE air before and after, respectively, every Cup Series race through the end of the year.  FOX Sports is back in February with live coverage of the 2016 NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES, NASCAR XFINITY SERIES and NASCAR CAMPING WORLD TRUCK SERIES seasons from Daytona.
