Mason Mitchell Finishes Third In ARCA Return at Pocono Raceway

Mason Mitchell, 2014 ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards champion made just his third start of the 2015 season Saturday afternoon in the Pocono ARCA 200. Mitchell proved even though he hasn’t been behind the wheel every week in 2015 in the ARCA Racing Series there was no rust.

Mitchell, driver of the No. 78 Mason Mitchell Motorsports (MMM) Chevrolet gambled late in the race staying out on the track while the other leaders decided to pit and inherited the lead. The driver/owner of MMM was able to finish in the third spot and earn his third top-five finish in five Pocono starts.

“This car was better than the car we raced last June here,” Mitchell stated after the 80 laps race. “We were on a different strategy than Bayne and Enfinger. I’m pretty disappointed that we didn’t win.”

“I can’t thank everyone on this MMM team enough for all of the hard work and giving me such great cars. I’m not sure when I will be back in the series, hopefully soon.”

Mitchell who raced a Chevy for the first time since Kansas 2012 qualified the No. 78 in the second position in Menards pole qualifying presented by Ansell.

When the green flag waved on the eighth race of the 2015 season Mitchell got a great start on the outside line and took the lead away from Trevor Bayne in turn on. Mitchell led the next eight laps before settling into the second position.

Mitchell brought the No. 78 down pit-road at lap 19 during the race’s third caution. The No. 78 crew changed four tires and fuel sending Mitchell back on track in the 17th position.

It only took Mitchell seven laps to work his way back inside the top-five at lap 27. His surge continued as he moved back into the second spot right after halfway.

During the afternoon’s final caution at lap 63 Mitchell elected to stay out while leader Bayne hit pit-road. Mitchell held off a challenge for the third position and earned his third top-five in five races at Pocono Raceway.

Mitchell led twice for a total of 13 laps. With the finish the Iowa native earned his 29th ARCA top-ten finish in his last 32 starts.
