Kelly Moss Maintains Championship Lead With Double Podium Finish at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park

Kelly Moss Motorsports produced a double-podium finish in an exciting weekend of Pirelli World Challenge© GT Cup presented by MOMO action May 16-17 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario.

“All in all, it was a good weekend,” Kelly Moss Vice President Jeff Stone said. “It was close racing, but we picked up points, and that puts us one step closer to the championship.”

Kelly Moss and driver Colin Thompson picked up their seventh win in eight races this season in dominating fashion during the first race of the weekend Saturday. Thompson led practice and captured pole position for the eighth and ninth times this season. He then led the field from start to finish to claim victory by .521 of a second over Kelly Moss/TruSpeed Autosport partnership teammate Sloan Urry.

Thompson also started Sunday’s race in a battle with Urry. Halfway through the race, the two made contact entering Turn 10. Both spun, but Thompson recovered and regain the lead. But with 10 minutes left in the race, he was chased down by Phil Fogg Jr. and Lorenzo Trefethen.

Thompson held third position and capitalized on an off-course excursion by Fogg on the final lap. Thompson took the checkered flag in second position behind Trefethen, continuing his podium streak and maintaining his points lead in the championship.

“The first race was a good, clean race,” Stone said. “The second wasn’t as much. Colin and Sloan were both racing hard, and the close racing led to an incident between the two of them. At that point Phil had the lead but unfortunately had a tire failure on the last lap. We were really disappointed for him, but it was great to see all three of the guys on the podium for the weekend.”

Rounds 8 and 9 will air at 5 p.m. (ET) Sunday, May 24 on CBS Sports Network.

The next two rounds of PWC GT Cup competition will be Friday, June 26 through Sunday, June 28, at Kelly Moss’ home track, the legendary 4-mile, 14-turn Road America, in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

It will be a double-duty weekend for the Kelly Moss team as it balances the next two rounds of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama series, which is racing the same weekend at Watkins Glen International.

“This is just what we do,” Stone said. “Just last weekend we had guys testing at Watkins Glen the same time we had our PWC race. We do what we have to do to get our guys prepared. We’ll be back at the Glen next week for a PCA (Porsche Club of America) event and then a mid-month test at Road America for both our PWC and IMSA guys.”

The team will head home briefly to Madison, Wisconsin, for the Classic Car Show at Brat Fest, May 24, an event sponsored by Kelly Moss and Stone Brothers’ Garage. For more information on the Classic Car Show, visit www.kellymossmotorsports.com/bratfest-2015.
