Pro Mod Showdown in the Swamp Results from Palm Beach International Raceway

The weather on this weekend was beautiful for drag racing. Temperatures ranged from low in the 70’s and highs in the 80’s, with little to no humidity. During the weekend’s race several teams had mechanical failures sending them to the haulers quicker then expected. Only one foul took place in any of the classes during the final round, yielding head to head action for the wins.

 

 

Pro Mod Showdown in the Swamp
In Pro Mod qualifying it was Rubin Tetsoshvili of Wesley Chapel, Fla. taking the No. 1 position with a pass of 3.986, 196.53 mph. In Round 1 of eliminations Tetsoshvili got a bye run advancing him onto the semi finals where he faced Todd Abrams of West Palm Beach, Fla. Tesoshvili again got the win light moving him into a final. John Benoit from Montpelier, Vt. faced off against Port St. Lucie, Fla. native, Mike Iania during the semi finals. Unfortunately for Iania his ’68 Chevy Camaro broke giving Benoit victory. During the final, Tetsoshvili ran a 4.327, 141.31 mph but it was Benoit taking the win light after running 4.259, 177.07 mph.

In X632 qualifying, it was Jeff Ensslin of Lakeland, Fla. driving his ’37 Chevy “Still Doin Time” to the top spot with the low ET of 4.461, 157.85 mph. Ensslin was later knocked out during the semi finals by Greg “Racin” Cason from Lexington, Ky. During the finals, Cason faced off against Jason Juday of Lutz, Fla. Close start off the line from both drivers, Cason with a .108 RT to that of Juday’s .079 RT. At the top end of the 660 is was Juday taking victory with a pass of 4.524, 156.15 mph to that of Cason at 4.540, 159.99 mph.

Outlaw 632
 
Round 1 of Outlaw 632 eliminations started off with a single run for the No. 1 qualifier Troy Blake from West Palm Beach, Fla. Blake took his ’69 Camaro to the finals facing off against Royal Palm Beach, Fla. native Heather Carter. Blake took victory running a 4.542, 160.06 mph to Carter’s 4.929, 127.10 mph.

Ultra Street
 
In the Ultra Street class it was the ’79 Malibu Wagon of Eric Kenward from Vero Beach, Fla. with a dominating performance. In qualifying, Kenward ran 5.050, 139.6 mph to take the top spot. For the finals Kenward faced up against Ari Birchfield from Hollywood, Fla. Birchfield beat Kenward on the reaction time but at the top end it was Kenward laying down a 5.065, 139.62 mph pass to take the victory.

5.50 Index
 
The 5.50 Index class yielded close times with all the racers running near that 5.50 mark. Scott Kervern from Boynton Beach, Fla. proved to be closest to the number throughout all three rounds. Kerven ran a 5.515, 124.20 mph in round 1 and 5.519, 123.56 mph during round two. In the finals Kervern faced off against Wade Gullet from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Gullett red lighted at the tree giving the victory to Kernern who ran a 5.524, 124.22 mph.

6.50 Index
 
The 6.50 Index class crew yielded only one foul and no one breaking for side by side passes throughout the race. In the final round it was Jim Reve of Pompano Beach, Fla. facing off against Luther Mathews of Miami, Fla. Reve ran 6.515, 107.50 mph to the pass of Mathews at 6.524, 102.24 mph. The win light went to Mathews from his .030 RT.

7.50 Index
 
In the 7.50 Index finals Gene Witherspoon of Loxahatchee, FLa. went up against Chuck Henderson from Pompano Beach, Fla. Both drivers had comparable reaction times, within .009 seconds of each other. At the top end it was Witherspoon having the better pass to get the win light running 7.541, 89.61 mph.

7.90 Jr. Dragster
 
The 7.90 Jr. Dragster finals put the winner from the first Showdown in the Swamp, Kyle Anderson of Lake Worth, Fla. up against Jupiter, Fla. native Ariana Foster. Anderson left the tree with a .013 RT to Foster’s .023 RT. The .010 advantage was not enough to stand up in the end. Anderson ran a 7.939, 79.32 mph while Foster took the win running 7.910, 80.61 mph.

8.90 Jr. Dragster
 
In the 8.90 Jr. Dragster class, Jupiter, Fla. native Will “Race” Smozanek faced off against Kyle Anderson who pulled double duty running both classes. Both drivers ran faster than the 8.90 index but this time it was Anderson taking home the win as he ran 8.454, 59.47 mph with a .009 second reaction time on the tree.
