California’s Sean Johnston joins Performance Tech for Rolex 24 Hours At Daytona

California native Sean Johnston is coming home for the first time in three years to compete in North America’s largest sports car race, the Rolex 24 At Daytona.

Johnston will join Performance Tech Motorsports in the Prototype Challenge class of the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship series for the twice-around-the-clock classic Jan. 24-25 at Daytona International Speedway.

Johnston won the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama championship in 2012 in North America, a key stepping-stone for aspiring professional sports car drivers. Then he made the major step to move to Europe to race against some of the top GT sports car drivers in the world in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup – an official Formula One support series – and Porsche Carrera Cup Germany.

Now Johnston will take skills hardened in the crucible of European and global competition to the 3.56-mile road course at Daytona to race against current NASCAR, IndyCar and IMSA standouts and former Formula One drivers in the Rolex 24.

The Rolex 24 will be a homecoming for Johnston in more ways than one. He served as a junior engineer on the Performance Tech crew four years ago, performing tasks ranging from fuel calculations to buckling drivers into their race seat. Johnston now will be behind the wheel for the team in its quest to finish on the podium for the second consecutive year, as Performance Tech placed third in the PC class in 2014 at Daytona.
