Gov. proclamation declares August as ‘Motorsports Month in Michigan’

Michigan International Speedway received a special visit on Sunday when Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder attended the festivities for the Pure Michigan 400.

Gov. Snyder is the first sitting governor to visit the Irish Hills track for a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race in more than a decade.

Snyder, along with Lt. Gov. Brian Calley, Sec. of State Ruth Johnson and others from Michigan’s legislative are attending today’s race while also declaring August as “Motorsports Month in Michigan” in a special proclamation by the governor.

“I’m very excited to attend the Pure Michigan 400 at Michigan International Speedway and have the opportunity to announce that it’s ‘Motorsports Month in Michigan.’ To visit the Irish Hills of Michigan and witness one of the greatest sporting spectacles in Michigan will be exciting for me,” Snyder said.

With a rich automotive heritage in the state and in the backyard of the automotive capital of the world, Detroit, Michigan International Speedway has brought the sport of racing to the forefront since its founding in 1968.

Since that time, the sport of NASCAR has grown into one of the state’s largest sporting events twice a year in June and August. The two annual NASCAR dates regularly attract fans from 13 countries and all 50 states.

Additionally, the proclamation recognizes MIS for the amount of tourism it brings in with 60 percent of its fan base coming from out of the state and Canada thus bringing in an estimated $300 million in annual economic impact for the state.
