Big Game Motorsports and Gravel Hustle for Second-Place Result at Kennedale Speedway Park

Big Game Motorsports pilot David Gravel captured his third podium result of the season last Saturday at Kennedale Speedway Park.

Gravel set quick time in his group during qualifying before he placed second in a heat race, which earned a spot into the dash. A run from sixth to fourth place in the dash lined Gravel up on the outside of the second row in the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series main event.

“We qualified good from the get-go and finished in the top two in the heat race,” he said. “We didn’t get a good dash draw, but we were able to gain a row, which put us in a solid position to have a good run in the feature.

“There was a lot of banging wheels early on. We had a couple of cautions and red flags. At the end of the race the track started opening up and was getting slick in turns three and four and getting trickier and trickier. It’s a tight race track with not a lot of space. We had to be careful early and we were able to turn up the wick at the end.”

Gravel dropped just out of the top five early before climbing into a podium position in the waning laps. He rapidly reeled in the top two competitors on the last lap, hitting the bottom lane in turns one and two to advance into the runner-up position. The leader went to the bottom in turns three and four and Gravel hustled the top groove to end only a couple of car lengths back as the checkered flag was waved.

“You’re just pushing and the car was getting better,” he said. “I had to be patient in getting that fuel burned off and then I was able to be more aggressive at the end.”

The strong run moved Gravel into a tie for the lead in the World of Outlaws championship standings.

Friday’s weekend opener rained out, marking the fourth rainout in March.

Next up will be Gravel’s debut at Thunderbird Speedway in Muskogee, Okla., this Friday during the World of Outlaws Thunderbird Showdown. The weekend concludes on Saturday at 81 Speedway in Park City, Kan., with the World of Outlaws Wichita Sprint Car Showdown. He placed third at the track last season.

“There’s several tracks coming up we haven’t been to,” he said. “We’ll see what it’s like and react from there. We’ve been to 81 (Speedway) a few times and I’ve felt good there so I’m looking forward to going back.”
