Kanaan quickest in opening IndyCar practice

IndyCar saw action at Pocono Raceway for the first time since their return last year.  Nothing changed since 2013 in opening practice as a Chip Ganassi Racing (CGR) car was on top of the speed charts.

Tony Kanaan posted a speed of 221.344 mph, which was faster than Marco Andretti’s track qualifying record of 221.273 mph last year.  CGR cars switched from Honda to Chevrolet in the off-season.  Hondas took six of the first seven spots in last year’s Pocono IndyCar 400 with CGR cars finishing 1-2-3.

It is vice versa for Andretti Autosport, who went from Chevrolet to Honda for the 2014 season.  Ryan Hunter-Reay won the Indianapolis 500 in May and the first race of the three-race IndyCar triple crown.

Hunter-Reay was second quick with his Andretti Autosport teammates Marco Andretti and James Hinchcliffe third and fourth quickest respectively.

Takuma Sato rounded out the top five in practice and will look to reserve his bad fortune at Pocono on Sunday after getting into an accident coming into the pits with Hunter-Reay in last year’s Pocono IndyCar 400.

The Verizon IndyCar Series will have one more practice from 1:30-2:30 p.m. with qualifying taking place at 5 p.m. ET.
