Steve Wallace Helps Bring Racing Back to Memphis

Former Snowball Derby Champion Steve Wallace–son of NASCAR Hall of Famer Rusty Wallace–will be among the entries when Memphis International Raceway makes its return to oval racing this weekend. Wallace and Ross Kenseth–son of another former Sprint Cup champion, Matt Kenseth–highlight the entry list for Saturday’s Memphis 250-an ARCA/CRA Super Series and JEGS/CRA All Star Tour event.

Wallace, a former perennial contender in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, may have an advantage on the competition when it comes to experience at Memphis. Among his 193 career Nationwide Series starts are five starts at the Tennessee bullring, including his Nationwide Series debut in 2005 and the final oval race at Memphis in 2009.

Noted Wallace, “I’m really excited about racing in Memphis again. It was always a really fun place to race and I’m happy that the great fans in Memphis will have some racing to watch again.

“Our finishes may not show it, but Memphis was a track where we always ran really well in the Nationwide Series. There were a couple of races there that we actually had a chance to win. Something always seemed to happen though-whether it was pit strategy, crashes or something else. Our finishes definitely don’t reflect how well we ran there.

“I really love short track racing and we should have a strong Rusty Wallace Racing Experience Ford this weekend. It’d be really cool to win the first race back at Memphis.”

Adding to the allure of the event for Wallace is the arrival of the Rusty Wallace Racing Experience (RWRE) at Memphis earlier this year. RWRE–a racing experience officially-licensed by Rusty Wallace–will serve as sponsor of Wallace’s car this weekend. This spring, RWRE made Memphis its first full-time facility, constructing a 15,000 square foot complex in the track’s infield. RWRE also participates in the organization and promotion of oval racing at Memphis.

Pit gates for the Memphis 250 will open at 7 AM on Saturday, with racing action beginning at 2 PM. Advance tickets can be purchased at http://www.racemir.com.
