NCWTS: Preview Phoenix International Raceway
This weekend the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will head off to Phoenix International Raceway for the 19th annual Lucas Oil 150. Tonight will mark race 21 of the 22 scheduled events of the 2013 season. The entry list currently features 36 unique drivers scheduled to race tonight.
Some fresh faces include Dj Kennington, Daniel Hemric, Steve Smith, Ross Chastain, John Hunter Nemechek, Cale Gale, Mason Mingus, Chad Frewaldt, Erik Jones, Chris Jones, Chase Elliott and Steve Wallace.
Only 36 drivers are scheduled to qualify tonight so no drivers will go home.
Matt Crafton goes into tonight’s race leading the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series points standings by 46 points over James Buescher. If Matt can come out of Phoenix Raceway with a 49-plus point lead, he will clinch the championship. It will also be his first NASCAR national series championship if he wins it this year.
"I'll say it every week until the season's done because nothing ever changes with this race team and our record shows it," Crafton said. "We'll unload at Phoenix prepared to win the race and that's all we'll look at. At the same time, we'll keep trying to make smart decisions. And it's a given that my guys at ThorSport never give up, as they proved at Texas."
Toyota can clinch the manufactures championship if they can come out of Phoenix with third place point standings or better.
Darrell Wallace, Jr. comes into Phoenix with strong momentum after a seventh place finish last Friday at Texas. He currently leads Ryan Blaney by one point in the Sunoco Rookie of the Year standings going into tonight. After winning at Martinsville two weeks ago, Wallace joined rookies Jeb Burton and Ryan Blaney with at least a win this year.
“I’m excited to head to Phoenix this weekend. It’s another new track for me in the No. 54 Toyota Tundra, but we still have momentum on our side and I’m confident we will have another strong run this weekend," said Darrell Wallace, Jr. "Phoenix is a track where we can actually drive it and don’t have to depend on the air that much so I’m looking forward to that. Hopefully we can get us another top-10 finish and be the top finishing Rookie for the fifth race in a row.”
You can catch tonight’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series event live at 7:30 p.m. Et. on Fox Sports One. The Motor Racing Network will provide live radio coverage of the event. You can listen to MRN live on MRN.com, TuneIn applicaton and AudioNow by dialing 1-832-999-1717 on your mobile phone.
NNS: Points Battle Drawing Tight With Two Races Left
With two races remaining this season in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, two drivers go into Phoenix with a shot to win this year’s title. Those drivers to watch in the next two races are Sam Hornish, Jr. and Austin Dillon.
Both drivers currently separate each other by six total points in the standings. Sam Hornish, Jr. has one win this season to benefit him if they happen to tie next week. Austin Dillon continues to look for his first win this season.
Austin Dillon will make his fifth start on Saturday afternoon at the one mile Phoenix Raceway. In four starts, he has captured three top-10 finishes. In his first ever start there, he started in the 35th position and went on to a 34th place finish in 2009. Austin will run the same chassis he ran at Phoenix, Richmond, and New Hampshire earlier this season that drove him to a sixth-place finish back here in March.
“I like flat tracks. New Hampshire Motor Speedway is an example of a flat track where I feel like I have been successful in the past, and I feel like Phoenix International Raceway has some similar characteristics so I am looking forward to this weekend. I think the repave has changed the dynamics of the racing a little bit, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s a handling race track where it’s very important to work on your car and make sure it’s right for the race. Phoenix International Raceway is a place where getting off of each corner is very big. Entry is important. You need to be stable but you need to be the first one to the gas.”
Sam Hornish, Jr. goes into one of his best tracks this weekend. It is the site where he captured his first career NASCAR and also his first career INDYCAR win at. After making six Nationwide Series starts, he has earned three top-10s and only one top-five finish.
Even though Phoenix could be considered his best track, he still has a hurdle to go over this weekend with his past finishes all over the place. This race last season he finished in the 14th spot and in seventh in March.
Both drivers will make Saturday’s ServiceMaster 200 very interesting this weekend as they battle it out for a championship. With both drivers being successful at Phoenix, it will be hard to predict on what will happen between the two.
NNS: Bowman Wins Pole in Texas
Alex Bowman captured his second career NASCAR Nationwide Series pole today at the Texas Motor Speedway with a fast lap of 29.002 seconds, 186.194 mph. Bowman’s last pole in the series came right here at the Texas Motor Speedway in April. Today will mark his 13th time this year where he will roll off in the top-10. He goes into this weekend still looking for his first Nationwide Series win.
Brad Keselowski will roll off in the second spot for today’s race after running a lap time of 29.035 seconds, 185.982 mph. Keselowski will make his 14th start in the 2013 Nationwide Series season to try and take back the owner points lead with two races remaining after today. He was just 0.033 seconds off of pole sitter Bowman.
Sam Hornish, Jr. found himself third on the speed chart with a lap of 29.082 seconds, 185.682 mph. Hornish also needs a solid finish to get around points leader Austin Dillon for the championship. This will be his 25th top-10 start this year.
Points leader Austin Dillon posted the fifth spot in the qualifying session with a fast time of 29.239 seconds, 184.685 mph. He goes into today’s race with a eight point lead over Sam Hornish, Jr.
Morgan Shepherd was the only car to not qualify for the event.
NCWTS: Ty Dillon Wins Wild Truck Race at Texas
Ty Dillon captured his third career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series win tonight at the Texas Motor Speedway in his 45th start. Dillon led a total of 130 of the 147 laps that made up the 15th annual WinStar World Casino 350 for his eleventh top-10 finish in 2013. Dillon earned Richard Childress Racing’s 100th NASCAR victory across the three racing series.
Johnny Sauter ended up in the second spot when the race ended. Sauter drove his way to the front after starting from the eighth position this evening to score his 13th top-10 finish of this season. He lost tonight’s race by 2.662 seconds.
Ron Hornaday, Jr. grabbed another top-10 finish this season tonight at the Texas Motor Speedway for his ninth of the year after coming home third tonight. Hornaday could be near a win sometime soon after having some great runs going the last several weeks.
Darrell Wallace, Jr. was the highest finishing rookie in the seventh position. Wallace, Jr. started off the evening in the 17th spot. He goes into Phoenix International Raceway next week looking to capture his second win of the year in the series.
Matt Crafton leaves Texas tonight still with the points lead by 46 over James Buescher with two races remaining. If Matt Crafton can leave Phoenix Raceway next weekend with a 49-plus points lead over second place, he can clinch the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series title going into the season closure at Homestead.
You can catch the second to the last race of the season for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series next Friday at 8:00 p.m. Et. live on Fox Sports 1. The Motor Racing Network will provide live radio coverage of the event. No MRN station near you? No problem. Jimmie Johnson found himself third on the speed chart when the session concluded. Johnson ran a fast time and speed of 27.559 seconds, 195.943 mph. Current points leader Matt Kenseth will start the race from the sixth spot with a lap of 27.619 seconds, 195.518 mph.
Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. was the highest qualifying rookie after posting a lap time of 27.674 seconds, 195.129 mph.
NCWTS: Burton Captures Pole at Texas Motor Speedway
Jeb Burton will start off on the pole tonight at the Texas Motor Speedway after a fast time of 29.813 seconds, 181.129 mph. when qualifying ended. He also comes into tonight’s race looking to win his second race at the Texas Motor Speedway after winning here in June. He was the highest qualifying rookie.
Justin Lofton will make his eighth start this season at the Texas Motor Speedway qualifying in the second position. Lofton ran a fast time of 29.886 seconds, 180.687 mph. when he made his run. This is his sixth start this season in the top-10. He showed that no matter his injury to his hand suffered two weeks ago at Talladega Superspeedway can stop him.
Ty Dillon will roll off tonight in the third position after posting a time of 29.888 seconds, 180.675 mph. on his run. This will be Dillon’s 16th start in the top-10 in a race this season. NSCS: Truex Ready to Continue Momentum After Great Run at Texas in April
Martin Truex, Jr. heads into Texas Motor Speedway looking to start back where he left earlier this season. Back at Texas in the spring, he led the second most laps of 142 of the event, but had to settle in the second spot after losing the race by 0.508 seconds.
Truex ran the test session at the 1.5-mile oval last week in hopes to capture the victory this Sunday.
Truex hopes to go out with a bang to help the team in a positive way after what they had to go through this season. With the next three race tracks being good places for him, Martin thinks they can get some great finishes in these last three events.
“All this NAPA team wants to do is go out swinging. They have always worked hard and deserve something really good to happen. We’ve had such a great time together and we want to finish out this season strong. The last couple of weeks have been frustrating. Not a lot has gone our way. Three of our best tracks are coming up. Hopefully they will be good to us so that we can do some good things. All we want to do is to go out on a positive note. This NAPA team deserves it.”
Martin also provided an update on his wrist after he suffered an injury just before the Chase started. He said it is about 75 percent healed. Martin said the cast is removable and only needs to wear it when he is inside the race car.
NNS: Owner Points Battle in Full Swing
Two weeks ago at the Charlotte Motor Speedway, the No. 54 Toyota passed the No. 22 Ford in the NASCAR Nationwide Series owner points battle. Penske Racing went into Charlotte with a five point lead after having some struggles at Kansas late into the running. Going into Texas Motor Speedway this weekend, Joe Gibbs Racing leads by four points with only three races remaining.
Texas this weekend could be a big factor for the No. 22 Penske Racing Ford to get a great finish. Keselowski has yet to capture a victory at Texas, but has finished inside the top-five in seven of his eight starts. The No. 22 has captured eleven victories this season among four different drivers. Penske has yet to win a NASCAR Nationwide Series owners Championship.
“Man, we’ve been so close at Texas over the years but haven’t been able to lead that last lap. We’ve had great speed but it seems like someone else always has just a bit more. This year, though, I think it will be a different story. These Discount Tire Ford Mustangs have a lot of speed everywhere we go. We lost a lot of points a few weeks ago and we need to start making them back up this weekend. Winning the race would go a long way towards doing that.”
The No. 54 Toyota comes into this weekend at Texas fresh off a victory two weeks ago at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. The No. 54 has a total of ten victories this season and hopes to tie the No. 22 this weekend. Kyle Busch did capture the victory back here in the NASCAR Nationwide Series in April. That same weekend, he also captured the win a day later in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
“It used to not be so much. I had some wild races there early on in my career and it wasn’t one of my favorite places, for whatever reason. Things have gone well, recently. The spring was a dream weekend for me there. Obviously, the Nationwide Series wins I had there all in a row and getting the win in the Truck Series the last couple of years have been real confidence-boosters. I’ve sort of learned how to drive it a little bit better and I know what I need in my racecar to make it easier. The cars JGR has given me since I joined the team have also been a confidence-booster there.
