Second-year Southern California Lightning Sprint Car driver Seth Dyer will take another step up the racing ladder when he competes for the first time in the Perris Auto Speedway Young Gun Sprint Car Series this Saturday night. Dyer will be in the familiar yellow #39 normally driven by his father Jeff in the USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series.

The original plan was to put a car together for the 16-year-old to race at the last event of the season in November at Perris.  Last month that plan changed when Jeff suffered a torn Achilles tendon. The injury has ruled him out for the remainder of the 2023 season. At the urging of Cal Smith, Jeff’s partner on the #39, Seth will get his first opportunity to race a full-size sprint car this Saturday. 

“Actually it was more Cal’s idea,” Jeff Dyer said over the phone while visiting Knott’s Scary Farm on Thursday night.  “I tossed it around after I got hurt.  I asked Cal what he thought about putting Seth in the car.  He said he would think about it and I said I would think about it, too.  He called last week and asked me if we were going to do it.  I said, ‘why the hell not, lets do it.”

One of the stumbling blocks in doing it was finding a set of restrictors for the car.  The engine in the #39 is a 410.  The Young Guns have to use 360s or 410s with restrictors.  Initially, Dyer had a hard time finding them. But he tracked a set down owned by fellow USAC/CRA driver Brent Owens. Thus, young Seth, who lives in Yucca Valley, California, will be in action on Saturday night.  

“I told him there is no pressure,” the elder Dyer continued.  “I told him to just go out and log some laps and have some fun.”

Seth, who is fourth in points and leading the Rookie of the Year chase in the POWRi Southwest Lightning Sprint Car Series and who is seventh in California Lightning Series points, is ready to go.

“I am pumped dude,” the teen stated when asked how excited he was to drive a full-size sprint car.  “It is the most exciting thing I have ever done.  It was a pretty big surprise but we have had it in mind for a while.  We are actually doing it now.  There will be some nerves.  It is a lot bigger (than a lightning sprint) so there are going to be some things to learn.  It is going to be about getting used to the horsepower and the big size of the car.”

Saturday’s race and the November 11^th season closer will be a tune-up for the younger Dyer as current plans have him contesting the Young Gun Series in 2024 while still getting in some races in his lightning sprint car.

Chris Windom hasn’t run full-time in a midget since winning the 2020 USAC national championship, but he showed no signs of rust in the USAC NOS Energy Drink Midget National Championship’s feature event at Eldora Speedway, Friday night, leading all 25 laps with Jade Avedisian finishing second.

The win is the fourth in a row at Eldora for a CB Industries Toyota and the 11th USAC win for a Toyota-powered driver this season.

Avedisian would start the night from the pole with Windom on the outside of the front row, but it was Windom that get the advantage at the start to take the lead. Behind him Avedisian moved into second as Windom’s CB Industries teammate Bryant Wiedeman would quickly move up the field to challenge her. He eventually overtook Avedisian for second on lap four.

As Windom would open up a solid lead, Wiedeman and Avedisian would wage a battle for second for much of the race. Eventually, Avedisian would regain second place on lap 16 and begin to close on Windom. By lap 18, she cut the lead to just .730 seconds and would stick right with Windom before an eventual bobble on lap 23 would allow Windom to open his lead back up on the way to the victory with Avedisian finishing second. Wiedeman would bring it home in fourth to give Toyota three of the top four finishers on the night.

Also earning top-10s for the night were Justin Grant in seventh, rookie Gavin Miller in eighth and Ryan Timms in tenth.

The USAC NOS Energy Drink Midget National Championship returns to Eldora Speedway Saturday night for the 41st running of the 4-Crown Nationals.

Garden Grove, California’s Brody Roa will be shooting for his ninth win in 14 starts and his fourth in a row when the USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series visits Perris Auto Speedway for Saturday’s annual Glenn Howard Classic.  The race comes one week after Roa’s car owner and teammate Tommy Dunkel finished eighth in last Saturday’s USAC West Coast Sprint Car Series race at Jim Naylor’s Ventura Raceway

Roa’s dream season carries on two weeks after his impressive runs in the USAC National Sprint Car Series in Texas and Arkansas.  At the Thursday night show at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, he started 14th in the main event and finished sixth.  Two nights later at the Texarkana 67 Speedway in Arkansas, he was the sixth-fastest qualifier in the 31-car field and placed 14th in the main event.

Roa, who became a dad for the second time when daughter Rylee was born two months ago, carries a bulging 840 point lead in the championship standings going into tomorrow night’s race on the Riverside County half-mile clay oval.  The winner of eight of the season’s first 13 races in the Inland Rigging #17R, Roa started his 2023 domination of the series when he swept both ends of the season-opening weekend at the Cocopah Speedway at the end of January.  Since then he has only gone two races without a win twice this season.  Of the four other drivers who have won USAC/CRA races this year, only one has been victorious more than one time. 

Saturday’s race will be the sixth of the year for USAC/CRA at The PAS.  In the previous four, Roa has two wins, a second place, a fifth, and a 15th.  The 15th came at the Salute to Indy in May.  Roa was leading that one late in the going when he was clobbered by another driver and knocked out of the race. 

Murrieta, California’s Dunkel returned to action at last week’s USAC West Coast Series race at Ventura.  Twenty-one cars showed up for the event and Dunkel, in his super clean #17A, qualified 11th fastest with a time of 12.631.  Soon after, the friendly driver placed fourth in his 10 lap heat.  In the main event, he started outside the sixth row in 12th in the 20-car field.   As usual, he moved forward and finished eighth.  Despite the fact that he has only started three of the West Coast races this season, Dunkel is up to 18th in the championship point standings

It was Dunkel’s third USAC West Coast race of the 2023 season and his best finish.  All told between the USAC West Coast Series and the Ventura Racing Association in 2023, he has made five starts at Ventura.  He has four top 10s and three top two finishes including a win in the April 8th VRA race. 

Dunkel initially planned on contesting Saturday’s USAC/CRA event at Perris.  However, he plans on competing for the USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year award in 2024.  Drivers are eligible if they have qualified for four or fewer main events in the series.  Presently Dunkel has been in three.  So, he is sitting this weekend’s race out but will return to USAC/CRA action at the Western World Championships at Arizona’s Cocopah Speedway on the first weekend in November.  His next start in the USAC/West Coast Series will be at Bakersfield’s Kern County Raceway Park on October 7th.

The final race of the 2023 season for the NASCAR Pinty's Series teams, part of the Pinty's Fall Ball, is set to take place this Sunday at Delaware Speedway in Ontario, and Jean-Philippe Bergeron is looking forward to it.

"I had the chance to test my car on this track a while ago, and I'm quite satisfied with the recorded times. The car is performing well, and I'm looking forward to finishing the season on a positive note", says the driver of Jacombs Racing's number 1 Mustang, who is virtually assured of finishing eighth in the championship. He knows that the competition will be fierce, but he will certainly be one of the drivers to watch in the 250-lap race.

The race will take place on Sunday, September 24th, at 4:30 PM and will be broadcast live on the TSN+ apps and FloRacing website.

Kevin Harvick will be retiring from NASCAR Cup Series competition at the end of the 2023 season and Texas Motor Speedway officials have been waiting the many months since that announcement to send “Happy” Harvick off with a fitting tribute before his final laps at The Great American Speedway in Sunday’s Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400.

The 2014 NASCAR Cup Series champion talked with and answered questions from the hundreds of Harvick fans who came to see their favorite driver in the speedway’s Grand Ballroom.

Harvick was then presented a number of gifts by Speedway Motorsports President and CEO Marcus Smith, Texas Motor Speedway Executive Vice President & General Manager Mark Faber and Texas Motor Speedway Vice President of Events and Speedway Motorsports Director of Events Kenton Nelson. Smith presented him with a key to Texas Motor Speedway, Faber handed in a long-horn steer skull with Harvick’s No. 4 Busch Light paint scheme and Nelson handed him a proclamation signed by Texas Governor Greg Abbott. The event was hosted by PRN’s Brad Gillie.

“Marcus was a big piece of why I came back and drove this year just because of the fact that he explained why it was important to come back and celebrate with the fans,” said Harvick. “It gives everyone kind of an opportunity to go for the last time to the race track.

“Texas has been just a great race track for us through the years and being able to know that every time we used to step foot in here in an Xfinity car, you were expected to win the race. We finally broke that barrier on the Cup side after so many shortfalls. So, it’s fun, especially at a place like this where you’ve been fortunate to have had success.”

Harvick at Texas has earned three NASCAR Cup Series victories, five NASCAR Xfinity Series victories and one NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series victory in 63 total starts. His Cup wins came in consecutive years (2017, 2018, 2019) and three of his five Xfinity wins came in consecutive years (2001, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2012). His lone Truck Series win came in 2011.

He reached the NASCAR Playoffs in this final season despite not winning a race in the regular season but was eliminated after the first round. He now has seven races remaining to capture a 2023 win after going winless in only four of the previous 22 seasons (2004, 2008, 2009, 2021).

The NASCAR Playoffs weekend will be highlighted by the NASCAR Xfinity Series Andy’s Frozen Custard 300 on Saturday, Sept. 23 (2:30 p.m. CT on USA Network, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Ch. 90, and PRN), and the NASCAR Cup Series Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400 on Sunday, Sept. 24 (2:30 p.m. CT on USA Network, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Ch. 90, PRN, and 95.9 The Ranch-local). Bobby McCarty made it known that he’s going to be the driver to beat under the lights on Saturday night in the ValleyStar Credit Union 300 at Martinsville Speedway by setting the fastest time in Friday’s practice and qualifying sessions.

McCarty, who trails Brendan “Butterbean” Queen in the Virginia Triple Crown standings by only a half position, will lead the first of four qualifying races to green on Saturday following a lap time of 19.704. The time bettered his own Martinsville track record in the process.

Landon Huffman posted the second-fastest time of 19.768 and will sit on pole in the second qualifying race. Carson Kvapil will lead off the third qualifying race after a lap of 19.809, and Ryan Millington posted a time of 19.825 to hold the top starting position the fourth and final qualifying race.

“It feels great to win the pole, especially with 85 cars here. I’m really proud of everyone at R&S, Solid Rock Carriers and all of our sponsors that make this possible,” said McCarty. “We were fastest in practice and qualified on the pole, hopefully I can win this thing finally this year so we can go celebrate.”

By virtue of having the fastest lap time, McCarty also won a $5,000 bonus.

This year, no drivers are locked into the field for Saturday evening’s prestigious ValleyStar Credit Union 300 through qualifying. Instead, the field will be set by those four 25-lap afternoon qualifying races. The top 10 finishers in each of the qualifying races will comprise the 40-driver field for the main event.

McCarty started off the day fast, topping the afternoon practice session with a time of 19.966 seconds. Millington was second with a time of 19.978, Huffman was third, Matt Cox was fourth, and Queen rounded out the fastest five in the session.

When it comes to the Virginia Triple Crown picture, Queen’s average finish of 1.5 through the first two races at South Boston Speedway and Langley Speedway gives him a narrow lead over McCarty’s 2.0 average finish. Queen had the seventh-best time in qualifying. Trevor Ward is in third with a 5.0 average finish, but will need to find some speed on Saturday, as he posted the 25^th-best lap in qualifying.

Reigning ValleyStar Credit Union 300 race winner Peyton Sellers was 13^th on the leaderboard during qualifying, improving his time from practice, when he was 24^th fastest overall.

The ValleyStar Credit Union 300, the nation’s biggest, richest and most prestigious NASCAR Late Model Stock Car race and the Virginia Triple Crown finale, will return for an evening of intense competition on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 7:00 p.m. The qualifying races begin at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23.

When Perris Auto Speedway fans show up for this Saturday’s Glenn Howard Classic featuring the Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Cars, driver “Shugah” Shane Sexton will feed them a piece of eye candy.  Known for flashy cars, he will be debuting a brand new GAS Chassis with one of the flashiest-looking graphics packages to ever grace the famous Riverside County half-mile.  Sensational colors, purple chrome chassis, and chrome decals will certainly make the car stand out.  The flashy car will help draw attention to new sponsors Bill’s Jerky and Hot Dog Kustoms.

Saturday’s race will be Sexton’s first at Perris since his frightening flip down the back straightaway on April 15.  In that crash, at times he was higher than the track billboards.  Amazingly, the GAS Chassis held up very well and it protected the driver.  However, the energy from the crash broke his back.  When he gets to The PAS on Saturday, he will have a new CASM seat mount that protects drivers in crashes (check out the team’s August press release for details).

Sexton was going to debut the gorgeous car last month, but the incoming Hurricane Hillary forced the track to cancel the race.  Since then, the happy-go-lucky racer has made one race driving Mike Schweitzer’s #41B in the California Lightning Sprint Car Series at the Bakersfield Speedway.  After winning his heat race there, the car blew the fuse to the starter relay knocking him out of the main event with one lap to go.

Texas Motor Speedway Stats; Saturday’s Andy’s Frozen Custard 300 will mark Retzlaff’s second start at the 1.5-mile Texas oval. During his debut in October of 2022, Retzlaff would qualify in the 23^rd position and after making contact with another car on Lap-1 that would require repairs dropping him behind ten laps. At the conclusion of the 300-laps Retzlaff would be credited with the 21^st position.

Superspeedway. The longtime JGR partner will be featured on the No. 15 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro with driver Tanner Gray.
