Strong start thwarted for Tyler Young at Kanas

Tyler Young and the Young’s Motorsports team had high hopes after a five week break for their first top-10 finish of the season in Friday night’s Kansas 250 at Kansas Speedway.

Unfortunately, after a strong start, a series of obstacles thwarted their efforts and the Midland, Texas native was unable to finish the race in his No. 02 Randco Industries/Young’s Building Systems Chevrolet Silverado.

Young qualified a solid 17th in the two-day show at the 1.5-mile speedway. When the green flag dropped for the fourth race of the season, Young maintained a steady pace in his No. 02 Chevrolet until the first caution flag waved on Lap 11 for an accident in Turn 2.

Under the yellow, crew chief Bryan Berry elected to bring his driver down pit road for adjustments and fuel in hopes the field would rotate through a long green flag run.

When racing resumed, Young would suffer his first setback of the night after being tagged for a pass-thru penalty for a restart violation. Young accepted responsibility for the mistake and brought his No. 02 Randco Industries/Young’s Building Systems Chevrolet Silverado to pit road and returned to the track 27th, one lap down.

Through determination, Young muscled his way back through the field and circled into the top-20 when the second yellow flag slowed the field on Lap 42 for a spin in Turn 4.

With fuel, four tires and a chassis adjustment, Young lined up 19th for the impending restart.

A slow restart ahead of Young forced the rest of the field to check-up, with the sophomore driver receiving extensive damage to the rear of his truck. Young soldiered on, but was forced to take his truck to the garage after smoke appeared inside the cockpit.

Upon further review, the team deemed the issue non-repairable, forcing them to retire from competition and finish a disappointing 23rd.

“While we’re disappointed with our finish, we’re encouraged by our performance. The night started off really good for our Young’s Motorsports team. We were just biding our time, waiting to make our move. I made a mistake on the second restart and that really put us behind. We battled through it and put ourselves back into the top-20, before other obstacles worked against us. I’m proud of my team for their efforts this weekend. We continue to learn and grow as a team. I’m looking forward to Charlotte next Friday night and the opportunity to score our first top-10 finish.”
