No. 24 team wants to max out at Daytona

Tuesday, Jul 03

In Saturday night's 400-miler, Jeff Gordon prefers MAX over Zero.

Nine races remain until the "Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup" field is set and Gordon is currently 18th in the point standings. While he is 180 points out of the lead, the 85-time race winner is only 11 points - plus one win - out of a Chase berth entering the summer event at Daytona International Speedway.

"We want to get in the Chase bad and we know we have to win races to do it," said Gordon, driver of the No. 24 Pepsi MAX Chevrolet. "Max points is what we're going for - this weekend and every weekend.

"Prior to the race, you don't change your strategy based on where you are in the standings. It's just business as usual trying to put the fastest race car on the track and preparing to win races, and that is no different than what we've been doing all year long.

"But your mindset may change when you get into the race and you have to make a risky call."

Gordon is no stranger to Victory Lane at the 2.5-mile high-banked track. In 39 starts, he leads all active drivers with six wins. In addition, Gordon has three poles, 12 top-fives and 19 top-10's. But start No. 40 at the Florida track brings a new set of challenges.

"We don't know what kind of racing we are going to have at Daytona," said Gordon, the all-time leader in restrictor-plate victories with 12. "Based on February (here) and based on (the other restrictor-plate track) Talladega - given the challenges we had with tandem racing - we now have equal or greater challenges.

"And one of those challenges - managing (engine oil and water) temperatures - will be crucial during the race on Saturday night."

Pack-style racing also creates more opportunities for the drivers according to Gordon.

"I enjoy this type of racing more," said Gordon, comparing racing in packs versus tandem two-car drafting. "I think this way gives the drivers the opportunity to create more chances instead of relying on the car you're pushing or the one that is pushing you. [Pack drafting] brings things back into our hands.

"It's going to be exciting at the end, but you have to be there. And that is what we're working hard on.

"Being there at the end when it counts."

Heavyweight Bout: Kasey Kahne Takes On Dale Earnhardt Jr. In The Finals Of The "Drive for the Cover" Campaign

Tuesday, Jul 03

This is it. A month of voting by the most passionate fans in all of sports has whittled down the field to two mammoth combatants: Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kasey Kahne.  Two more weeks of voting between this pair of NASCAR stars will decide the victor of the Drive for the Cover campaign – and the ultimate prize of gracing the NASCAR The Game: Inside Line cover.

The first four rounds saw several upsets and unexpected matchups, and last week’s semifinals were no different. Kasey Kahne pulled ahead of Jeff Gordon early and never looked back. Kahne’s reward for the upset will be a head-to-head matchup with nine-time Most Popular Driver Dale Earnhardt Jr., whose journey to the finals has been far from smooth. Earnhardt Jr. defeated Danica Patrick in Round 3 to face reigning NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Tony Stewart in the semifinals. In a matchup that was closer than many expected, Earnhardt Jr. escaped the semifinals with a tight victory over Stewart.

NASCAR fans can vote in the bracketed tournament that is hosted entirely on NASCAR The Game’s Facebook page, which can be easily accessed at NASCARTheGame.com/Vote.

Voting for the finals of the “Drive for the Cover” campaign begins today with two weeks remaining in the campaign to select the driver who will adorn the cover of NASCAR The Game: Inside Line.

Here is the voting schedule, which culminates in July:  JULY 15 – Final Round Closes (Champion)

House-Autry Mills Joins Front Row Motorsports as a Primary Sponsor

Tuesday, Jul 03

House-Autry Mills is the latest company to join the sponsorship portfolio of Front Row Motorsports.  House-Autry has been 'the choice of Southern cooks since 1812' and is celebrating its 200th anniversary through a sponsorship program with Front Row Motorsports.

The maker of breaders, mixes and sauces will appear as the primary sponsor of David Gilliland's No. 38 Ford in the Labor Day weekend event at Atlanta Motor Speedway.  This will mark the company's first foray into NASCAR.

"We're very happy to be a part of Front Row Motorsports," said House-Autry President, Craig Hagood.  "I'm confident that David Gilliland will be a great ambassador for our brand.  He is not only a talented racecar driver, but a great, all-around guy.

"When we were looking for a team and a driver to pair up with, we looked for a driver that had a strong family connection.  David grew up in a racing family, served as a crew chief to his father, won a NASCAR Nationwide Series race with what was primarily a family-run team, and is now very involved in the racing career of his son Todd."

Front Row Motorsports' Chief Marketing Officer, Robin Johnson points to the recent sponsorship with House-Autry as yet another example of his team finding success in the marketplace.

"House-Autry is another great new partner for our team," said Johnson  "We're growing our business at Front Row Motorsports and we're targeting companies that want to grow their businesses and brands through NASCAR,"

Johnson also points to a rebounding economy, diligent prospecting and a compelling value proposition as key factors contributing to the success his marketing team has found this season.

"Unfortunately, the predominant story right now is that teams are struggling to find sponsorship," continued Johnson.  "On the contrary, our story is that, with the addition of House-Autry, we have brought nine new primary sponsors on-board this season, five of which are multi-race partners.  I believe that is a story worth telling.

"Our packages are priced at a level where a company can justify the investment. To write a check of a half-million dollars or more to sponsor a racecar for one race is a big commitment. For some companies, that works and they can afford to do it. For a lot of other companies - the ones we've found success in prospecting, that just doesn't make fiscal sense.

"I also think we package our sponsorships a lot differently than other teams.  We offer a lot of in-house support from our marketing staff, which allows us to be more efficient and provide greater value to our partners. Our partners understand that being on a racecar is not going to move product and sell services by itself. The racecar and the partnership with our team are tools; very valuable tools.  We have a team that teaches our partners how to use those tools to accomplish their objectives, and we have marketable drivers that are willing to go out of their way to ensure our sponsors are happy."

Hagood admits that being able to see the success story Front Row Motorsports in writing was key to his company feeling comfortable with their investment.

"They showed us what they were able to do for McCall Farms, a company very similar to ours, at Darlington and how that partnership had grown from a one-race sponsorship to a seven race program," said Hagood.  "We asked them to put together a similar package for us in Atlanta.  It was important for us to see Front Row's experience at leveraging their NASCAR assets in the retail space.  Being able to see their success stories and hear that their programs were working directly from their current partners went a long way towards building our confidence that NASCAR could work for us."

More information on House-Autry's sponsorship program will be available in the coming weeks.

Hot Night in Hickory for Rev Racing

Monday, Jul 02

The temperatures weren’t the only things hot at Hickory Motor Speedway on Saturday night, as both Rev Racing NASCAR Whelen All-American Series drivers remained hot and finished second and ninth in a rare caution free race.

With the air temperatures at 105 degrees, and the track temperatures in excess of 150 degrees, it was going to be a challenge for drivers, crews and fans to find a comfortable spot on or off the track.

“This was one of the hottest race weekends I have experienced,” said Mackena Bell, driver of the No. 4 Toyota Racing Development Camry. “ Practice was really not helpful since the track was so greasy and slick.”

The impact of the heat showed as Bell could only manage a 13th best qualifying position, while teammate, Trey Gibson, would make it to the outside of the second row, in fourth.

“I simply misjudged the track because of the heat and I didn’t have the qualifying effort I wanted,” added Bell.

Once the green flag waved, all the drivers in the 15-car field were blistering around the track as if they wanted to get out of the heat as quickly as possible.  By the halfway point Gibson was up to third and Bell had advanced two spots to 11th.  With only 18 laps remaining, Gibson was in second and Bell in ninth , which is where they would finish this caution free 50-lap feature.

“The track temperatures were still at 105 when the race started,” said Bell. “We had gotten the car fairly close and figured out the high line was working.  If it wasn’t for a caution free race, we easily could have had a much better finish but a top-10 isn’t bad.”

Gibson credits his conditioning to helping him overcome the heat and bringing his No. 2 Lithium Pros Toyota Camry home in second for the fourth time this year.

“All of the training and conditioning we get at the shop with Coach (Phil) Horton helps us when it gets hot like this,” said Gibson.  “It’s really a lot worse outside of the car than it is while we’re racing.”

“I think the heat did cause us to simply miss it on the setup tonight,” added Gibson.  “We were a little tighter than what we wanted and that caused us to be loose exiting the corner.  We still managed to bring home another second place finish thanks to the help of the good Lord, my great crew and sponsors.”

American Flag From the U.S.S. Eisenhower to Fly in the Sprint FANZONE during the Coke Zero 400 Weekend Powered By Coca-Cola

Monday, Jul 02

During the upcoming Coke Zero 400 Weekend Powered By Coca-Cola at Daytona International Speedway, race fans will experience many patriotic salutes as the “World Center of Racing” celebrates the Independence Day holiday weekend.

One of those salutes will have very special meaning to a U.S. Naval carrier group just commencing deployment.

Earlier this year, Daytona International Speedway President Joie Chitwood III and Vice President of Operations Andrew Gurtis took a once-in-the-lifetime trip to the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), also known as IKE, aircraft carrier in the Atlantic Ocean.

Flying from Naval Station Mayport in Jacksonville, Chitwood and Gurtis spent the night aboard the aircraft carrier, visited with sailors and presented a green flag autographed by all the drivers in this year’s Daytona 500 to the Commanding Officer, Captain Marcus Hitchcock.

In addition, Chitwood left an American flag on board the IKE with Captain Hitchcock.  On June 20, the flag was flown on the first day of a nine-month deployment and has since been returned to DIS to be flown during the race weekend in the Sprint FANZONE. Also the shooter – the crew member who signals the planes for take-off – used the autographed green flag to signal the first flight off the carrier on this deployment.

“IKE deployed from Norfolk, VA on 20 June at 10:30 a.m.,” Captain Hitchcock said. “It was an awesome and proud day for the ship and crew.  We are especially grateful to Daytona International Speedway and the entire Daytona community for their support and best wishes.  We look forward to continued relations with Daytona International Speedway and NASCAR as we embark on an historic deployment.”

Chitwood expressed his joy with his experience with the IKE.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to have that American flag returned to Daytona International Speedway to fly in the Sprint FANZONE,” Chitwood said. “It was incredible experience earlier this year to visit the IKE and meet the men and women who protect our rights and freedoms that allow us to enjoy NASCAR racing on our nation’s birthday.”

Tropeano, who also spent four years in media relations with the New York Mets, began his career with the Associated Press.

Both Macias and Tropeano will be based in NASCAR’s New York office and report to Schwartz, as will Scott Warfield, NASCAR’s director, broadcasting and entertainment communications, who is based in Charlotte. In his expanded role, Schwartz will now oversee Integrated Marketing Communications work with the following NASCAR business units: Partnership Marketing/Business Solutions, Corporate/ Multimedia Marketing, Licensing and Automotive; Broadcasting, Digital Media, Entertainment Marketing and Productions; Brand, Consumer and Series Marketing; Green Innovation and Multicultural Affairs, including NASCAR’s Drive For Diversity program.
