Defending Victor Ambrose Looks for Win No. 2 at The Glen

Marcos Ambrose will return to the site of his first career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory looking for a repeat this weekend at Watkins Glen. Ambrose collected his first Cup win in dramatic fashion last season as he took the lead with just a lap and a half remaining. Known to many as one of the best road course racers in the business, Ambrose hopes to add win No. 2 to his resume at the 2.45-mile track on Sunday.

The Australian native heads to “The Glen” with an impressive resume, posting one win and four top-three finishes in his four-career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starts at the Watkins Glen, N.Y., track. His average start is 15.2 and his average finish is 2.2. Ambrose has completed 100 percent of laps attempted (362), leading 38 of them. Ambrose also has three-consecutive wins in the NASCAR Nationwide series at the New York road course.

Marcos Ambrose’s Thoughts on Racing at ‘The Glen’: “Watkins Glen is one of my favorite race tracks and it’s definitely been good to me in the past. It will always have a special place in my heart because it’s where I got my first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series win. It’s a track that suits my driving style, and I have a lot of success there in both the Nationwide and Cup Series. I have a lot of good memories from our win there last year, and I’m hopeful we can go out and win No. 2 this weekend. I’d like nothing more than to be climbing out of my Stanley Ford in Victory Lane at the end of the day on Sunday. My team has worked extremely hard the last few weeks and it would be a good shot of momentum for the second half of the season if we could pull off a win this weekend.”

Comments from Crew Chief Todd Parrott on Going to Watkins Glen: “The key to getting around Watkins Glen is having Marcos Ambrose as our driver. We have to make sure the Stanley Ford turns well and has good brakes. Brakes are always really important at these road course races, so we need to make sure our driver takes care of them the best way he can. We need the car to have good drive off of the corners and especially off of Turn 1. The biggest challenge we will face this weekend at Watkins Glen is making sure we stay on the race track and take care of the brakes and the transmission. Pit strategy will be key as this race typically comes down to two or three stops. Last year we had to make three pit stops because our mileage wouldn’t allow us to do it in fewer. This year we are hoping with the new EFI systems our mileage will be better and we will be able to make it in the preferred two stops.

“We are going into this weekend with a lot of high hopes and a lot of positive feelings. The team knows we can win there after our result last year, and it’s Marcos’ best road course. We need to make sure all of our ‘I’s’ are dotted and our ‘T’s’ are crossed so we can come home with another ‘W’ on Sunday.”
