MENCS: Chase Elliott wins the Geico 500 at Talladega Superspeedway

Chase Elliott won Sunday’s Geico 500 at Talladega Superspeedway giving Chevrolet their first win of the 2019 NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series season.

Driver No. 9 took the lead after a restart with just four laps remaining and worked with three other Chevrolet drivers to hold off the rest of the competition. For Elliott, this is his first victory since October and his fourth victory of his career.

“What a day! A huge thanks to all my partners, my team, Hendrick Motorsports, Chevrolet. There was a lot of teamwork done today,” Elliott told FOX. “You guys up there, you’re the ones that really make it happen.

Rounding out the top five were Alex Bowman in second, Ryan Preece in third, Joey Logano in fourth and Daniel Hemric in fifth.

Elliott joins six other drivers to win through the ten races so far this season and would lock up his spot in the playoffs.

Elliott’s victory also ends a seven-race winning streak for Ford at Talladega.

The finish of the Geico 500 ended under caution after David Ragan made contact with William Byron , who made contact with Kyle Larson and sent driver No. 42 sliding across the backstretch. Larson would flip six times before coming to a stop.

“It was a little bit scary, but thankfully i’m all right,” Larson told FOX.

Rounding out the top ten were Kurt Busch in sixth, Ryan Newman in seventh, Brendan Gaughan in eighth, Aric Almirola in ninth and Kyle Busch in tenth

The NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series will head into Dover International Speedway in the running of the Gander RV 400. Live coverage begins at 2:00 p.m. Eastern on Fox Sports 1.
