Penalty Report – Darlington, & Canadian Tire Motorsport Park

Plenty of penalties were recently handed down to race teams in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, XFINITY Series and Camping World Truck Series. A total of 10 drivers hit with rule infractions.

Ryan Newman’s Chase hopes took a big hit with today’s announcement. After failing post-race laser inspection (Sections 12.1; 20.17.3.1.2) at Darlington Raceway, the driver of the No. 31 Chevrolet was issued a P3. Newman was also docked 15 points in the standings, which means he has now fallen 22 points behind No. 1 Chevrolet driver Jamie McMurray. Luke Lambert, the No. 31 crew chief, has also been fined $25,000 along with Richard Childress Racing losing 15 owner’s points.*

Kyle Larson also failed post-race laser inspection (Section 12.1; 20.17.3.1.2; 12.5.3.3.3). As a result of a P2 penalty, Larson’s crew chief Chad Johnston has been fined $22,500 with the No. 42 team docked 15 driver points.  Chip Ganassi Racing also loses 15 owner points. With the Michigan victory a couple weeks ago, Larson is locked into NASCAR’s playoffs.

No. 21 driver Ryan Blaney was issued a P1 for improper driver protective clothing equipment (Section 12.1; 12.5.3.2.1; 20.2.1.1). He was not wearing gloves during a practice session. The Chase hopeful received a fine of $1,000.

The teams of Brad Keselowski (No. 2 Ford) and Carl Edwards (No. 19 Ford) failed laser inspection three times before the start of the Bojangles Southern 500. They received written warnings and will lose 15 minutes of practice time at Richmond. Joey Logano’s No. 22 and the No. 32 of Jeffrey Earnhardt, both in the Ford camp, were issued a written warning for failing LIS twice. Tony Stewart’s No. 14 Chevrolet was given the same for failing pre-race template inspection.

In the XFINITY Series, Ryan Preece’s No. 01 Chevrolet failed pre-race laser inspection, earning a written warning. Chevrolet Silverado 250 winner John Hunter Nemechek (No. 8 Chevrolet) and Tyler Young (No. 02 Chevrolet) were given written warnings for truck trailing arms that did not meet rule specifications during the truck race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. Nemechek and second-place finisher Cole Custer (No. 00 Chevrolet) were not penalized for their post-race conduct.

*Richard Childress Racing issued a statement just moments ago. “We do not plan to appeal the penalty issued today to the No. 31 team. Our rear toe settings were well within specs during pre-race inspection. The car made contact with the outside wall during the race and there was clear damage to the right rear fender and tire. NASCAR has told us that the LIS standard is clear and the car must pass post-race inspection even if damage has been sustained.”
