Roush Yates “Walk to Daytona” Challenge

With eighteen teams of five, Roush Yates employees started their journey last Monday, May 25th to reach Daytona by the Sunday, July 5th Sprint Cup Race, walking or running. The challenge is designed to encourage employees to be more physically active with a universal goal of everyone doing 10,000 steps per day.

Each person is equipped with a Fitbit, pedometer or app on their phone to track how many steps they take each day with 2,500 steps equaling 1 mile. Teams submit their total daily steps each week and their team race car is moved accordingly on a map.

In just 10 days, Team Haters Gonna Hate made it on foot from Mooresville, NC to Daytona International Speedway, a total of 502 miles. In essence, each team member walked an average of 10 miles or 25,000 steps per day to reach Daytona.

“Our ultimate goal is to have our employees happy and healthy,” said Doug Yates, “Monday, I was driving back from the gym at lunch and I saw a handful of Roush Yates employees walking. It brought a big smile to my face knowing how this activity brought our employees together. Over half of our company is competing, which is amazing.”

With a total of 90 people competing in the contest, competition is fierce. Co-workers can be seen walking around the business park on their lunch breaks and after work on their quest to reach Daytona.

“I was up at 4am to go to the gym so I could walk and run on the treadmill,” said Don Landrum, “I have noticed a big change just in the last week and a half by walking more. I feel better overall and I have more energy, it’s a good feeling.”

Each member on the team that reaches Daytona first will win a Fitbit Charge HR, while the individual with the most steps during the six weeks will win two season passes to the US Whitewater Center in Charlotte, NC. The second and third place teams will win New Balance shoes. The remaining teams that arrive to Daytona will be entered in a drawing for other great prizes!  Of course, every team that reaches Daytona will receive a “Walk to Daytona” t-shirt.

“The challenge has really brought everyone together as a team to win and accomplish a goal,” said Tommy Johnson, “We reached Daytona this morning around 8am as a team. It’s been enjoyable and we will still be walking every day just as much as before to finish out the challenge.”

When you see Roush Yates employees out walking or running around the Lakeside Business Park in Mooresville, NC give them a wave, honk or even better, join them on their Walk to Daytona.
