Gilliland Says ‘Lady in Black’ Is a 10

David Gilliland, driver of the No. 38 A&W All American Food Ford, comments on racing at Darlington Raceway:

“Darlington is very, very tough. I enjoy it and always look forward to going there, but it hasn’t been one of my better racetracks. The ‘Lady in Black’ is very, very difficult. On a scale of one to 10 of difficult tracks, it’s a 10. We’ve run really well there before, but just haven’t been able to finish it off. That wall just sneaks up and bites me. I’m going to try to give it a little more room this time.

“It’s a combination of everything that makes it so difficult — the narrow surface and the different angles at both ends. You can never get your car driving perfectly on both ends, or at least I have never been able to. So, you’re always compromising. And you’re running inches away from the wall on both ends, so it’s easy to find yourself in trouble.”
