Suspension damage slows Truex in Martinsville, Rookie comes back to record season-best finish

Ryan Truex and the No. 83 Borla Exhaust Toyota Camry team finished 30th at Martinsville Speedway on Sunday afternoon.  After being spun on-track just past the halfway point, Truex rebounded to finish the race in the 30th position and improve the team’s best finish of the season.

Truex rolled off 38th for the STP 500 at Martinsville Speedway.  Competing at the historic track for the first time in a Sprint Cup Series car, Truex worked closely with his Borla Exhaust crew to dial in the balance of his Camry throughout the first half of the race.  Moving into the top 25 by lap 200, Truex was racing on the lead lap when he made contact with another competitor on lap 251.  The contact forced Truex’s car into the turn 4 wall and ultimately brought out the caution flag.  With cosmetic damage to both the front and rear of the car, as well as slight suspension damage, Truex brought his Toyota Camry down pit road for repairs by his BK Racing team.

The suspension damage caused Truex’s car to handle differently than it had earlier in the event.  With the proper strategy and slight air pressure and chassis adjustments during each pit stop, Truex was able to regain the ground he lost during repairs to return to the lead lap of competition by lap 350.  Continuing work to improve the damaged suspension, Truex nursed the car home in the 30th position marking the Borla Exhaust team’s best finish of the season.

“Our Borla Exhaust team put together one of the best racecars we’ve had all year,” commented Truex.  “We were racing inside the top 25 when we had contact on the track.  Unfortunately the suspension damage we sustained in that accident put us a bit behind the curve.  My BK Racing team did a great job working on the car and trying to make us better, but there wasn’t too much we could do to reverse the damage.  I’m excited that we get to come back to Martinsville this fall-I think we learned a lot this weekend and it will help us when we come back.”
