In the early stages of the NextEra Energy Resources 250 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway, Jason Leffler felt that the No. 18 Dollar General Toyota was one of the fastest trucks in the field. Unfortunately, his Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) debut came to an abrupt end when his brand new Tundra was severely damaged in a multi-truck accident on lap 18.
Rookie Paul Harraka got loose off the exit of Turn 4 and made contact with Chris Cockrum on the inside lane. After the contact, Harraka’s truck shot up the track and slammed Leffler’s Toyota into the outside wall of the frontstretch. The Dollar General Tundra spun across the track through the infield grass before it finally came to rest along the apron at the start-finish line.
“I have no idea what happened,” said a dejected Leffler after being released from the infield care center. “All I can tell you is the Dollar General Toyota was really fast. Just got shuffled back and was kind of riding and just got wiped out. I have to thank everybody — Dollar General, Toyota, M&M’s, Flexco and everybody at KBM for this opportunity.”
Rookie John King scored his first career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory under caution after the field failed to complete its third and final attempt at a green-white-checkered finish. Timothy Peters and Justin Lofton finished second and third respectively. Travis Kvapil and Jason White rounded out the top-five.
There were nine caution periods for 37 laps. Half of the field, 18 drivers, failed to finish the 109-lap race.
