Scott Stenzel started the fred’s 250 in MB Motorsports’ #63 Making The Driver / Mittler Brothers Machine Tool Ford in 36th position. Just 56 laps later, he had raced all the way up to 6th place.
“What a day we had going,” says Stenzel. “We came here looking for redemption and I think we got it. We started at the back of the pack, but the MB Motorsports crew had done such a great job on our truck that I was able to move up through the field. The truck handled extremely well. Once we caught Timothy Peters and Matt Crafton, we fell in behind them and we moved our way up toward the front. It was very exciting”
Stenzel wasn’t the only one excited. Team owner Mike Mittler was thrilled to see his truck running as high as 6th. “That was really something. Scott did a super job driving the truck. He gained 30 positions in a little more than 50 laps. We were up there running with the big boys.”
Adds Mittler, “Not only did Scott drive the truck very well, but the guys at the shop preparing the truck gave us a truck that was ready to go. John Monsam and our crew at the track made some changes to the set up, giving Scott what he needed to perform on the track. Everybody did their job extremely well. As the saying goes, ‘TEAM stands for Together Everyone Achieves More’. Our weekend at Talladega proves this to be true. This truly was a team effort and I am very proud of all of our people.”
Says Monsam, “We unloaded pretty well and then made some changes to improve the handling of the truck. We knew our truck was going to be better in the race than it was in qualifying, and the way Scott was able to move through the field, bore that out.”
Things were going well for Stenzel and MB Motorsports’ #63 Making The Driver / Mittler Brothers Machine Tool Ford. “With 8 to go, I was thinking we truly had a chance for a top five finish, definitely a top ten,” stated Stenzel. And then, with just seven laps to go, the caution came out for a chain reaction wreck on the backstretch. A hit from behind sent Stenzel into the inside retaining wall, along with Ron Hornaday and Ryan Blaney. Although Scott was able to steer the truck to avoid hitting the wall head on, MB Motorsports’ day was done.
“Although we didn’t get the finish I knew we were capable of, at least people saw that MB Motorsports can run up front.” Stenzel said. “Hopefully the potential sponsors we’ve been talking to about coming on board as marketing partners saw how well we were running before we were taken out. Everybody on this team works so hard, it’d be great to start next season off with primary sponsor on the truck.”.
