The AAA Texas 500 earned a 2.8 U.S. rating and averaged 4,749,000 viewers for the second of three Eliminator 8 Round races of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship format. Both numbers easily surpassed last year’s race (2.6 / 4,179,000) as well as the 2012 event (2.5 / 3,943,000). It was the best rating since a 3.4 for the 2011 AAA Texas 500 on ESPN.
The AAA Texas 500 was one of two major motorsports events being televised live from Texas that same day, with Formula One’s United States Grand Prix being run at the Circuit of The Americas in Austin. NASCAR dominated the television viewership, drawing nearly four times higher than F1’s overnight rating of 0.7 on NBC.
ESPN’s live telecast of Saturday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series O’Reilly Auto Parts Challenge at Texas Motor Speedway also enjoyed an increase from last year’s event with a 1.1 U.S. rating and an average viewership of 1,633,000. The 2013 race registered a 0.9 rating and averaged 1,395,000 viewers.
