Learning Process Continues for Gallagher at Charlotte Motor Speedway

Spencer Gallagher, driver of the No. 21 WaterPulse Chevrolet Camaro, earned a 29th-place finish in Saturday’s NASCAR XFINITY Series Hisense 4K TV 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Continuing his learning process, the Charlotte event marked Gallagher’s fourth start in the XFINITY Series.

Gallagher started the 300-mile race from the 22nd position. On lap 12, Gallagher reported to crew chief Joey Cohen that he was battling a loose-handling chassis when off the throttle. As Gallagher dropped back to the 25th position, the first caution of the day occurred on lap 15. Cohen called Gallagher to pit road for four tires, fuel, and a track bar and air pressure adjustment to help tighten the loose-handling conditions. The team gained three positions and restarted the No. 21 WaterPulse Chevrolet from the 22nd position on lap 19. After a short green flag run, the second caution of the day occurred on lap 26. To gain track position, Cohen called for Gallagher not to pit, placing him in the 13th position for the restart on lap 41. On lap 53, Gallagher made contact with the wall causing right side and splitter damage. Gallagher brought the No. 21 to pit on lap 54 under green flag conditions for right side tires, fuel, and to fix damage. A caution came out for debris in turn two on lap 55, keeping Gallagher from going more then one lap down. The 26-year-old came back to pit road on lap 55 to have left side tires put on and had to restart from the back of the field due to a penalty for coming down pit road when it was closed. Cohen brought Gallagher back to pit road multiple times throughout the race to work on the damage that was caused by making contact with the wall. Due to being the first car not on the lead lap when the caution came out, Gallagher earned one lap back under the fifth yellow flag of the day on lap 64. Cohen called Gallagher to pit road under caution conditions on lap 116 for four tires, fuel, and to raise the splitter height to stop it from making contact with the track. On lap 200, the final caution of the day occurred causing the race to go into overtime. Cohen instructed Gallagher to stay out, setting him up to restart on lap 204 from the 30th position. On the final lap, Gallagher gained one spot resulting in a 29th-place finish, six laps down.

Spencer Gallagher Quote:
“Sometimes you are going to have good days and sometimes you are going to have bad ones, it’s all in the learning process. I was battling looseness a majority of the race and when I hit those bumps in turn one it shot me up against the wall. I believe that the WaterPulse team and myself learned a lot this weekend at Charlotte. Now we need to keep our heads held high and take what we learned and incorporate that into the next race to help us get better.”
