Alternator Issues End Gordon’s Day Early

Luck was not on Benny Gordon’s side during Friday night’s Food City 300 at Bristol Motor Speedway. After NASCAR Xfinity Series team, Performance Energy Group, discovered the alternator failed, the team decided to withdraw from the race just 65 laps in.
 
“It’s unfortunate, because I felt really good about the car during the first few laps of the race,” says Gordon. “Howard Bixman and the crew made some big changes during and after practice, and knew it was going to be competitive. Howard came in on Friday morning with a plan, and implemented it for us to be competitive. I could drive and pass anywhere I needed to move to the front. Then I noticed I wasn’t able to move forward as much as I was in the beginning, the lights were going out in the dash and the motor was missing, so I knew it was something electrical.”
 
“We kept slowing down so we chose to bring the car in. After considering we were already laps down in the race, and we’re not competing for points, Howard made the decision to just park the car. There were already a few close calls, and we didn’t want to risk anything.”
 
Performance Energy Group and Benny Gordon in the No. 66 SRWR/VSI Toyota Camry plan to make their next race efforts at Richmond International Raceway during the Virginia 529 College Savings 250 on September 11.
 
“I just want to thank our partners for their support in this race and throughout the year,” says Gordon. “We are a new team, and that takes a lot of commitment from our partners to give us the support and to believe in this program. We’re moving forward from this, and going to focus our efforts on Richmond.”
 
Crew Chief, Howard Bixman commented, “Very disappointing results for the amount of effort we all put in this weekend. We changed about everything on the car during practice and after practice, focusing on race trim. Parts failure is something out of our control. We’ll review the issue and take the necessary steps to resolve it. This is a very competitive team with a winning driver. We all have seen that last month at Daytona with a top-five finish. With that being said, the PEG team is looking forward to their next race.”
