Landon Cassill ran in the front pack most of the race and expertly avoided a pair of big accidents to finish 11th in Saturday’s Winn-Dixie 300 Xfinity Series race at Talladega Superspeedway.
Driving the G&K Services Chevrolet, Cassill, who has a lot of experience at NASCAR’s biggest track, locked himself into the lead draft early, churning forward from a starting position of 35th to rapidly become a contender.
He raced as high as fourth place in the tense draft and avoided two big multi-car wrecks to stay in contention.
“It was a crazy day,” said Cassill, who backed up a 10th-place run last week at Richmond. “We had a car strong enough to stay up there with the leaders. My main concern was getting to the end, especially with all the crashes and stuff that was going on.”
Cassill gained a spot in the point standings to 15th.
