Alex Bright, Tim Buckwalter, Wayne Scott and Gary Bozowski punched their tickets into the third annual East Coast Indoor Dirt Nationals Saturday night inside Cure Insurance Arena in Trenton, NJ by winning the four 20-lap A-Main Qualifier 600 Sprint races Friday.
Bright is an open wheel specialist, Buckwalter is a versatile open wheel and stock car racer; Scott and Bozowski are full time Micro Sprint competitors.
The four heat winners as well as the second and third place finishers locked themselves into the 50-lap main event Saturday.
In heat one, won by Bright, Eddie Strada and Brendan Bright, the race winner’s brother and teammate, followed him into Saturday’s A-Main as qualifiers.
“The top was the place to be in this race,” Bright said. “I wasn’t moving down from there even though it got a little slicker in the last few laps.”
The second heat, won by Buckwalter, saw Billy Pauch, Jr. and Brian Carber transfer into the A-Main as second and third place finishers.
“I like the track,” Buckwalter, who like Bright used the high groove throughout the race. “I hope it holds up just like it did tonight for the A-Main Saturday.”
Wayne Scott won heat three. He outran Doug Snyder and 2018 East Coast Dirt Nationals winner Erick Rudolph to take the victory.
Scott won in a car owned by his uncle that he had never driven before. “I lost two engines at home putting my car together and missed practice,” Scott said. “We didn’t finish working on this until this morning.”
In the final 20-lapper, apparent winner Billy Koch came six pounds light in post-race inspection. Indoor Auto Racing Series officials provided Koch with several opportunities to weigh the car but it failed to make Jesse Maurer second and third.
“I don’t like to win this way, but I’ll take it,” Bozowski said.
Among the notable drivers who failed to qualify and will need to race their ways into the A-Main Saturday include Volusia Speedway Park Modified Point Champion Larry Wight, 410 Sprint ace Brian Montieth, 2017 race winner Whitey Kidd, recent New Smyrna Modified standout Anthony Nocella, Hyper Racing standout Austin Quick, and unfortunately, Koch.
Ten 12-lap heat races preceded the four Qualifiers. They were won by Billy Koch, Nick Groff, Erick Rudolph, Tim Buckwalter, James Morris, Austin Quick, Billy Covert, Dan Lane, Alex Bright and Kyle Spence.
Two Friday afternoon practice sessions for the drivers and teams entered in the third annual East Coast Indoor Dirt Nationals saw 74 teams on the clay. Brett Altemose (9.386) of Pocono Summit, PA and Aiden Bordan (10.167) of Jackson, NJ paced the fields.
The clay track, which had proven to be challenging in Thursday night’s optional practice sessions, remained table top smooth and yielded multi-groove passing opportunities throughout a night consisting of 14 races totaling 180 green flag laps of racing.
Saturday, the gates to Cure Insurance Arena open at 4:00 pm with racing beginning at 6:00 pm, starting with a pair of 10-lap F-Main with the top four finishers advancing to two 10-lap E-Mains. The E-Mains promote the top four from each into a duo of 10-lap D-Mains, which in turn advance the top four in each forward into the C-Mains. The top four in each C line up behind the two B-Main eligible drivers.
The top six finishers from each B-Main (12 drivers and cars) will transfer into the 24-car, 50-lap A-Main paying $5,000 to win.
The A-Main will also convey the Bob Hilbert Hard Charger Award to the driver who advances the most spots at the finish from their starting spot.
Precision Engine Oil is the designated sponsor of the B, C, and D alphabet main events.
Other event sponsors include Freiberger Excavating, Hoosier Tires, VP Race Fuels, Hyper Racing and Racing.

With over 65 murals covering walls and commercial buildings from Venice Beach to San Fernando Valley to Orange County, renowned L.A. muralist Jonas Never has added Auto Club Speedway to his to palette, creating a tribute to seven-time NASCAR Cup Series Champion Jimmie Johnson. The mural is the first one that Never has done in the Inland Empire area.
Never is a prominent muralist and many may recognize his incredible artwork throughout Southern California. One of his landmark murals is the “Touch of Venice” – a giant black and white image covering the wall of a four-story building at the edge of the Venice Boardwalk. The realistic murals are inspired by sports, music, movies, music and other iconic subject matters.
Jonas started off as a graffiti artist, so it was only natural to paint large objects and do them quickly. As a former college baseball player, many of his murals depict his passion for sports and pop-culture. He’s painted sport heroes such as Kobe Bryant and icons including Vin Scully. Follow @never1959 on Instagram to see his artwork.
“This is Never’s first mural focusing on a NASCAR legend. We’re honored to have him create this for NASCAR fans to celebrate our hometown hero,” said Dave Allen, Auto Club Speedway President. “It’s the perfect scenario that a Southern California artist is creating a long-lasting tribute to a Southern California NASCAR legend.”
The mural of the El Cajon native is more than a portrait. It tells a story of his career highlights at Auto Club Speedway. Johnson has six NASCAR Cup Series victories (more than any driver) including his first career NASCAR Cup Series win in 2002 at Auto Club Speedway. Johnson will race his last Auto Club 400 on March 1st as a full-time NASCAR Driver.
When NASCAR Auto Club 400 race weekend (Feb. 28-March 1) ticket holders arrive to Auto Club Speedway they will be welcomed by a 19’ x 24’ mural honoring Jimmie Johnson on the wall of the APEX building in the heart of the Fan Zone near the main stage.
With a race ticket, fans can see the Jimmie Johnson mural located in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Fan Zone, plus experience driver appearances, live music performances, autograph sessions, Monster Energy Smoke Show, Viva La Fiesta Zone, Lefty's Fun Zone - the ultimate kid hangout, interactive exhibits and other family fun. To purchase tickets, call 1-800-944-RACE (7223) or shop online at www.autoclubspeedway.com.

The history and heroes of the Indianapolis 500 will come alive through a variety of activities leading into Legends Day presented by Firestone on Saturday, May 23 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Some of the milestone events to be celebrated include the 50th anniversary of the first of Al Unser's four victories in 1970, the 40th anniversary of Johnny Rutherford's third Indy 500 victory in the famous "Yellow Submarine" car in 1980, the 100th anniversary of Gaston Chevrolet's win on a single set of Firestone tires in 1920, the 55th anniversary of Jim Clark becoming the first driver to win the "500" with a rear-engine car in 1965, the 15th anniversary of Danica Patrick becoming the first woman to lead the race in 2005 and many more.
Two new series at IMS.com will shine a spotlight on these events and drivers.
The first series, which starts Friday, Feb. 21 and then will run weekly on Fridays through early May, will showcase some of the great moments of the Indianapolis 500 that are celebrating milestone anniversaries this year. These pieces will focus on well-known events, such as Wilbur Shaw becoming the first back-to-back "500" winner in 1940, to more obscure events such as Mario Andretti's test with Firestone in 1970 that led to the introduction of slick tires to the race.
A second series, called "My Favorite Car," will feature interviews with Indy 500 race winners and legends choosing their favorite car they drove in the race, with memories and anecdotes about those magnificent machines. This feature, which also will include photos of the car, will run weekly on Mondays starting Feb. 24.
Video content that includes historical clips, IMS Museum footage, and narration from IMS Historian Donald Davidson, will also be featured on IMS social channels and the IMS YouTube page throughout the spring.
This content will help build anticipation for the full schedule of fan activities on Legends Day presented by Firestone on Saturday, May 23, the day before the 104th Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge.
Legends Day activities include the public drivers' meeting, autograph sessions with the 2020 Indianapolis 500 starting field and legendary veteran drivers, and more. Tickets are $10, with children 15 and under free when accompanied by a ticketed adult.
Country music superstar Luke Bryan and rising star Morgan Wallen will perform that afternoon at the Firestone Legends Day Concert in the IMS infield, a rousing conclusion to a full day of fun at the track. General admission tickets start at $35 and include admission to all other Legends Day activities at the track, with children 3 and under admitted free to the concert with a ticketed adult.
As the Official Tire of Country Music and the Official Tire of the Indianapolis 500, Firestone has served as the presenting sponsor of Legends Day since it debuted in 2014. The partnership brings together two platforms - racing and country music - that have played significant roles in the rich history of the time-tested Firestone brand.
Visit IMS.com or the IMS Ticket Office for tickets for Legends Day presented by Firestone, the Firestone Legends Day Concert and all other Month of May activities at IMS.
