Boyd Survives Kansas Carnage to Score Top 20 Finish

The NASCAR Xfinity Series rolled into Kansas City to begin round two of their playoffs. After a weekend off, Boyd was excited to put on a show for his family and friends at his home track.

Boyd would roll off from the 35th position to begin his day. The green flag waved and the Kansas Lottery 300 was underway. The race had barely started and chaos immediately ensued. The 7 car of Justin Allgaier got loose under the 20 of Christopher Bell coming off turn two on the first lap. The two made contact triggering a multi-car wreck, which collected four playoff contenders among several other good race cars. Boyd managed to work his way through the attrition with no damage. As soon as the race restarted caution would once again fly on lap 12 as the 19 of Brandon Jones made hard contact with the wall on the backstretch. The third caution of the day would wave on lap 26 after the 23 of Spencer Gallagher continued experiencing problems after sustaining damage from the first pile up of the day. Daniel Hemric would claim the stage one win with Boyd up to 26th.

Boyd radioed that his engine felt like it was starting to sputter at the end of the first stage. After discussions between Boyd and crew chief Jason Miller, Boyd was instructed to keep an eye on the issue. Boyd brought the Grunt Style Chevy in for four tires, fuel, and a track bar adjustment to help the car rotate the center of the corner better. On lap 57 caution waved after the 8 of JA Junior Avila spun around. Just as stage two was coming to an end the 35 of Joey Gase made contact with the 0 of Garrett Smithley, which also collected the 18 of Ryan Preece. John Hunter Nemechek went on to win stage two and Boyd made his way up to the 20th position.

After an action packed first couple of stages, the final stage was relatively calm. Boyd settled into the 20th position where he ran for the majority of the final stage. The final caution of the day would wave on lap 164 after the 78 of Vinnie Miller stalled out on the exit of pit road. Boyd managed to pick up one more spot on the final run and scored a 19th place finish. This was Boyd’s best career Xfinity finish outside of Daytona earlier this year, where he finished 17th. John Hunter Nemechek picked up his first career Xfinity Series win.

After the race Boyd reflected, “What an awesome result for us! It was a crazy day for us after having some kind of sputtering issue and having to avoid all those wrecks, but luckily it worked out. It’s pretty cool to have one of my best career runs in front of all my family and friends here at a home race track. We haven’t had a whole lot of good luck lately, so it feels really nice to be able to bring home a great result for this team.”

After a 19th place finish at Kansas Speedway, Boyd remains 25th in driver standings. The NASCAR Xfinity Series will once again have an off weekend before returning to action at Texas Motor Speedway. Race coverage of the O’ Reilly Auto Parts 300 will begin 4:30 PM ET Saturday November 3rd on NBCSN.
