No. 20 He Gets Us Toyota GR Supra News and Notes
- MARTINSVILLE WIN NOTES: Aric Almirola secured his third NASCAR Xfinity Series victory of the season last weekend at Martinsville Speedway. For the No. 20 team, it was their ninth win of the season and secured a Championship 4 berth in their pursuit of the Xfinity Series owner’s championship. The victory was the seventh of Almirola’s Xfinity Series career and marks the first time in his career that he swept both stages and the race.
- ALMIROLA AT PHOENIX: Almirola has posted two top-10 finishes and a pole award in eight career Xfinity Series starts at Phoenix Raceway. Earlier this season, Almirola finished 31st at Phoenix after being collected in a multi-car accident during the final segment. The Florida native has also recorded a pair of top-five finishes and seven top-10s at the track in NASCAR Cup Series competition. In three NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series starts at Phoenix, Almirola notched a pair of top-five finishes as well.
- TYLER ALLEN: Rookie crew chief Tyler Allen has led the No. 20 team to eight of its nine wins. Allen has visited victory lane multiple times with four different drivers – Almirola, Christopher Bell, John Hunter Nemechek and Ryan Truex. Overall, Allen’s team has posted 15 top-five finishes, 21 top-10s, and 853 laps led in 32 races this season.
- UNSUNG HERO: While drivers, crew chiefs, and even car numbers have changed, one constant in the Joe Gibbs Racing Xfinity Series program over the past four seasons is car chief Brian Gainey. Since the start of the 2021 season, Gainey’s teams have won a whopping 33 races in 131 starts. In 2021, Gainey served as the No. 54 team’s car chief for an 11-win season with multiple drivers including Christopher Bell, Kyle Busch, Ty Gibbs, and John Hunter Nemechek. The next season, Gainey was once again the No. 54 team’s car chief for Gibbs’ seven-win Xfinity Series championship season. Last year, Gainey worked as the car chief for Nemechek’s seven-win season.
- OWNER’S PLAYOFFS: Almirola and the No. 20 team are looking to earn Joe Gibbs Racing’s seventh Xfinity Series owner’s championship. The organization previously won the owner’s championship in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2016, and 2022. Three of the team’s Xfinity Series owner’s titles have come with entries like this year’s No. 20 car featuring multiple drivers. Most recently, Ty Gibbs won the Xfinity Series driver’s and owner’s championships for JGR in 2022.
- JGR AT PHOENIX: Joe Gibbs Racing owns 17 Xfinity Series victories at Phoenix Raceway, including Chandler Smith’s win earlier this year. In 120 combined starts at the track, the organization has tallied 52 top-five finishes, 83 top-10s, 21 pole awards, and 3,534 laps led. Christopher Bell, Kyle Busch, Ty Gibbs, Daniel Hemric, Brandon Jones, Joey Logano, Chandler Smith, and Sammy Smith have all driven JGR Toyotas to Xfinity Series victory lane at Phoenix. Overall, JGR cars have won four of the past six Phoenix races with four different drivers.

What does it mean to be in this position competing for the owner’s championship?
“It’s really a dream that the season has played out the way it has to get us in this position. When Coach and I first talked about me driving this car this year, this was the ultimate goal. Tyler (Allen) and these guys have had such an amazing year, and now we’re one step away from achieving what we set out to do in the offseason. I have a ton of confidence in our chances this weekend. We just have to execute and make it happen, and I definitely think we will be up for the task.”
