With only six races remaining in the season, Roush Fenway driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr., remains in first place in Nationwide Series point standings, as the No. 6 Blackwell Angus Team continues its strong bid to bring Roush Fenway its sixth NASCAR championship. Strong performance has been the key to the team’s success to this point and Stenhouse knows that will be the key during the stretch run.
“We have six more races and we have to bring the best cars to the race track we can and we have to make the most of our opportunities,” said Stenhouse. “We have met about it and talked about it and we understand that we cannot make mistakes, and if we stay focused and do our jobs we have a great shot.
“Our cars are good enough and our team is fast enough for sure,” added the 2010 NNS rookie of the year. “We just have to capitalize on what we have right now and the situation that we have been fortunate enough to put ourselves into.”
Stenhouse and company have 12 top-five finishes, 20 top 10s, two wins and three poles in the first 28 races of 2011, and they are about to embark on a stretch that saw the team turn its fortunes around last season and close out the season with three top-10 finishes during the stretch.
“We are very comfortable with the races remaining and I’m excited to get to all of these tracks,” said Stenhouse. “Dover is going to be a good one. We finished fourth there earlier in the year. We did not run as well as we wanted to the first race, but I think what we learned is going to play out very well for us this weekend.
“Kansas was probably one of our best runs last year; we finished sixth and ran top five much of the race,” added Stenhouse. “That race last season really kick-started what we were able to do the rest of the season. Charlotte, we finished fourth there in the fall and sat on the pole earlier, so we are looking forward to getting back there for some night racing, and the last three are probably my favorite stretch of the entire season.”
“We like where we are,” said Stenhouse. “We would like to be a little further ahead, but if you had of told us going into the year that we would be leading with six to go, I think we would have been pretty happy with that. We will just have to go from there and finish this thing strong. We know what our goals are and we know what is at the end and now we just have to go out and perform like we have all season.”
Roush Fenway Racing has five won titles across all three of NACSAR’s major series, including two in the Nationwide Series. Stenhouse is looking to become the fifth driver to win a NASCAR championship for Jack Roush and company.
