NXS: Chandler Smith steal victory as tire blows on Justin Allgaier car in the closing laps of Call811.com 200 at Phoenix Raceway

In the fourth edition of the NASCAR Xfinity Series of the season rolling into sunny Phoenix Raceway, Cole Custer would grab the pole over Chandler Smith, but Custer’s lead would be short lived with Smith taking control on the first lap.

Last year’s Cup winner at the track William Byron would start deep in the field in the 28th spot before making up eight spots in just four laps before the first caution of the day would come out. With just five laps in the books Josh Williams and Jeremy Clements would make contact with each other collecting Dawson Cram and Patrick Emerling.

Williams would be able to drive away with minimal damage as did Cram who had rear damage, but Emerling would be forced to drive his car to the garage ending his day early.

Following the restart, Smith would control and lead every lap in the stage to take home the opening stage win over Custer, Allgaier, Almirola, and Herbst.

Stage two would go caution free with Custer leading all the laps following the restart to take home the stage win over Allgaier, Almirola, C. Smith and Herbst. Smith would won the first stage of the day ending up starting the second stage in fourth after a tire got loose from the tire carrier on pit road.

Custer would win the race off pit road, but Smith would be right behind him just after the green flag dropped, eventually running down the Custer to take back the lead.

After a quick caution for Deegan spinning and dropping debris on the track, caution would come out once again for the fifth time of the day when Nemechek would spin in front of the field collecting multiple cars in the process ending the day for Deegan, Burton, Retzlaff, and Mayer.

“I’m sure we will have good conversations on Monday about the whole situation, and whatnot, but now that I’m out, the only goal was to go win. Now the focus is on tomorrow. We have a really good No. 42 Toyota Camry XSE. I’ve got to figure out how to drive from 19th to the front.” said Nemechek

Allgaier would take control of the race lead prior to the caution and holding off a multi-lap challenge by Chandler Smith who tried to get the lead back following the restart before falling back out of reach of Allgaier.

Just as five to go would be displayed from the flag stand, Allgaier would head into turn one with a full head of steam when the left rear tire would blow sending the No. 7 machine backwards into the wall. As Allgaier would exit the car in frustration would pick up the decklid and slam it against the car.

With Allgaier out of the race Chandler Smith would take over the lead heading into overtime as the green flag would go back in the air Smith would clear with Love and Creed behind him swapping positions but would come up short as Smith would take the checkered flag over Love, Creed, A. Hill and Custer.

“I truly hate it for them, honestly. They had it in the bag. For something like that to happen, it’s mentally tough. I’ve been in that position myself. All glory to God. Without him, I wouldn’t be here. I wouldn’t be with Joe Gibbs Racing, my Toyota family. First win back together. That’s great. It has a great ring to it.” Said Smith

The NASCAR Xfinity Series now moves onto Circuit of The Americas in two weeks Saturday, March 23 at 5 p.m. ET on FS1.
