Reed Sorenson won the Bucyrus 200 Nationwide Series race Saturday at Road America under caution – and under odd circumstances.
Justin Allgaier was leading when caution was called on the final lap of the third green-white-checkered-flag attempt on the 4.048-mile road course, but he ran out of gas at the top of Turn 6, allowing Sorenson to assume the lead on Lap 57 of the scheduled 50-lap race.
But as the cars continued toward the finish, Ron Fellows zipped past Sorenson and was the first car to reach the pace car, which leads the cars around the track during cautions. Sorenson and Fellows crossed the finish line side by side, and after deliberation, NASCAR ruled Sorenson the winner. Cars are not allowed to pass under caution but must maintain pace-car speed.
Fellows finished second, and Jacques Villeneuve, Eliott Sadler and Mike Wallace completed the top five. Allgaier finished 19th.
The victory was the fourth of Sorenson’s career and first since 2007.
