Hal Martin: Charlotte Motor Speedway Post-Race

Martin and crew of the No.44 American Custom Yachts Toyota Camry stayed closer to home this week to compete at Charlotte Motor Speedway, NASCAR’s home track. Charlotte Motor Speedway is a 1.5-mile quad-oval shaped speedway which boasts high speeds, and close quarters racing making for an exciting race for drivers and fans alike. Hal showed great speed and consistency during the race en route to matching his career best finish in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.

This was your first time racing at Charlotte Motor Speedway, what are your thoughts on this exciting mile and a half track?

“The events leading up to the race this weekend, as well as the race itself taught me a lot as a driver” Martin recalled. “NASCAR had allowed us a test day on Wednesday which afforded me the opportunity to learn the track, being as I’ve never raced at this track before. Thursday, we focused on getting the car dialed in for race trim in preparation for the race event on Saturday. Come Saturday, our car wasn’t the fastest in qualifying, but my crew and I were all confident that our car would be competitive in race trim. After qualifying in the 36th position, I quickly moved my way forward and finished the race in 23rd position, which ties my best NASCAR Nationwide Series finish to date. This race reaffirmed what I already knew – communication with my crew chief and entire crew is key. Also, my spotter, Mike Herman Jr., working with me and my crew chief, stressed the importance of getting down to the bottom in turns three and four. Mike was able to help me adjust my lines as needed and I was able to hold my position when it was crucial during the race.”
The Charlotte Race Weekend is well known for its Food Lion Speed Street experience, what was it like for you to participate in the festivities?

“I had a blast! Any opportunity I get to interact with the fans, both at track and away from track, is something I really enjoy. Our tent on Speed Street was right in the middle of all the action, and we got a chance to take in the sights and sounds of it all. The weather was beautiful and the company of my fellow NASCAR Nationwide Series drivers was great. We laughed with each other and with the fans and had a great time.”

This week, you also participated in Toyota Pitpass at Charlotte Motor Speedway, how was your experience?

“This week, I had the opportunity to join fellow Toyota drivers in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, Parker Kligerman, Alex Bowman and fellow TriStar Motorsports Teammate Eric McClure, at an autograph and question and answer session in the Vendor Midway at Charlotte Motor Speedway. I really enjoyed interacting with the fans at this event. Toyota always sets up such an interactive experience that allows the drivers and fans to interact in a fun and innovative way.”
