Roush Fenway Racing will hold Trevor Bayne out of this week’s Nationwide Series race at Dover International Speedway. Fellow Tennessee native Kevin Swindell will fill in for Bayne in the No. 16 Roush Fenway Mustang this weekend in the Nationwide Series race.
“Trevor’s symptoms have subsided and we are very encouraged by his progress,” said Roush Fenway president Steve Newmark. “Still, we are going to exercise an element of caution with his return to the track and keep him out of competition for at least another week.
“Trevor is itching to get back out on the race track, and, although it’s hard to keep someone with his passion away, we feel it is in his best interest to hold off for another week. As of now, we, along with the Wood Brothers, are planning for Trevor to return next week and compete in the Sprint Cup All-Star event in Charlotte and the Nationwide Series race in Iowa.”
For Swindell, the opportunity will be his fourth career NNS start and his first of 2011. It will also mark the Nationwide Series Dover debut for the 22-year old driver from Germantown, Tenn.
“In traditional Jack Roush fashion, he is going to use this opportunity to give another young developmental driver a chance to showcase his skills,” added Newmark.
“Chris (Buescher) did a great job filling in for Trevor in the last two races. He has conflicting commitments in the ARCA Series this weekend, so this gives us a chance to provide quality seat time for another up and coming driver this weekend at Dover.”
Swindell, the son of Sprint Car legend Sammy Swindell, won the 2011 Chili Bowl Midget Nationals earlier this year, becoming the first driver to post back-to-back victories at the prestigious event. He boasts 21 career victories across winged sprints, non-winged and midget cars. At age 17, he became the youngest driver to win a World of Outlaws feature, scoring the victory at The Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
He has won two poles and led 213 laps in 15 starts in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series. He has two starts in the NASCAR K&N Series at Dover, qualifying in the top four on both occasions, and finishing ninth there last fall. He finished 12th earlier this year in the ARCA race at Daytona.
