MIS to field team in Ice Kart Race this weekend

The Michigan International Speedway team knows all about racing. But racing a go-kart on a sheet of ice may be a different story.

Curtis and Team MIS will be doing just that on Saturday, March 26, when the speedway will compete against 19 other teams on the ice during Ice Kart Racing at the local Optimist Ice Arena in Jackson, Mich.

Racing begins at 6 p.m. Admission is $5.

“What an opportunity to race go-karts on ice at this great local community event,” MIS President Roger Curtis said. “We host the country’s greatest racing at MIS every summer, but racing on ice will be totally different. This event that will be fun for Team MIS to compete in and we’re glad to support it this weekend.”

Local promoter Steve Lefere, who owns and operates Jackson Speedway, is organizing the endurance ice race. Lefere hosts weekly racing at Jackson Speedway in the spring and summer and also hosts a charity race event in late July, which MIS has fielded a team in for several years.

“We’ve had a great relationship with Steve and Jackson Speedway for a long time,” Curtis said. “I’ve personally always enjoyed competing in the 24-hour race for charity in the summer. We haven’t won that event in quite a long time, but it’s nice to just be able to compete in it and support local charities in our community in the process.”

For the Ice Kart Race, each team will compete in three 40 lap heat races, with all teams having a starting competitor and three driver changes during each heat race. The top eight teams from each heat race will advance automatically to the 150-lap feature event (seven driver changes are mandatory for the feature). The top three teams will receive trophies.

MIS actively participates in the local go-kart events to provide assistance to the charities and non-profit organizations that benefit from the races. With its non-profit arm, MIS Cares, the speedway has continued its mission to support the local communities that support it every summer.

“We love the community we live in here in Michigan and pride ourselves on the relationships we have built with our community organizations and government entities, especially in the surrounding Jackson, Lenawee and Hillsdale counties,” Curtis said. “Although we can’t help with every single request we receive, we do the best we can do support as many charities as we can and participate in these events to support local business and non-profit organizations who are in need.”
