Pierce, McCarty to Drive Full Time for Nelson Motorsports At South Boston Speedway This Season

Nelson Motorsports will field two full time NASCAR Whelen All-American Late Model Stock car teams in 2017, with drivers Brandon Pierce and Bobby McCarty.

Nelson Motorsports will field a third car in special events for NASCAR Camping World Truck Series veteran Timothy Peters.

Pierce, returning to Nelson Motorsports for a second season, will join McCarty in his first year in the team’s Toyota Camrys. Both drivers will be vying for the win in the Danville Toyota Twin 100s this Saturday afternoon as they kick off a full season at South Boston Speedway.

“We believe we have two of the best young drivers in the region driving for our team,” said Barry Nelson, founder of Nelson Motorsports and owner of seven car dealerships in Virginia and North Carolina. “We have a great team and two young, talented drivers to work with. We believe it’s going to be a great season for Nelson Motorsports.”

Last season was Pierce’s first season in a full-bodied stock car but by mid-July the Guilford Technical Community College student had made the adjustment, reeling off four straight top-five finishes and five straight top-10s.

“I learned a lot last year. My year started off slow and rough at times, but that was to be expected in my first season,” said Pierce. “But as the season went on I hit my stride and got on a little hot streak in the middle of the summer and our year turned around.”

McCarty has competed for his family-owned Late Model team the last few seasons and has managed to race for wins the past couple of years. In 2016 he had one win and nine top-five finishes at South Boston. Late last fall he was tabbed by Nelson to fill the seat of one of the team’s Late Models when Peters was unable to compete in Martinsville Speedway’s iconic Late Model race due to commitments to his Red Horse Racing team in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. McCarty was up to the challenge, running in the top five for a good portion of the day.

When Nelson decided to expand to two fulltime cars this season, McCarty was a natural choice to fill the seat.

“I’m very excited to be joining the Nelson Motorsports team. It’s a very big deal for me because they’ve got a great bunch of guys that do awesome work. I’m really excited about the season getting started,” said McCarty, who will be sponsored by autosbynelson.com and BRCC.

Pierce is excited about his sophomore season, but knows there’s probably a little pressure.

“My expectations are to improve on what I accomplished in my rookie season,” said Pierce, who is sponsored by Thunder Road Harley Davidson, Amanzi Marble, Granite and Tile, Discount Oil Co., and AutosbyNelson.com. “Of course, with it being my second full time season I don’t have the excuses of being a rookie so I have to accept that and minimize my mistakes. Racing with Nelson Motorsports is a dream come true and a blessing. Racing with this team has definitely helped speed up my learning process with their experience.”
