Fan Wins Toyota Camry at Bank of America 500; Puts First Mile on New Car Yesterday with Lap Around the Track

Charlotte Motor Speedway race fan Mike Sheets, of Advance, N.C., won a brand new 2012 Toyota Camry by competing in a special contest held during Bank of America 500 Race Week and put the first mile  on the new car with a lap around Charlotte Motor Speedway yesterday.

“That’s always something that I wanted to do, was drive on the track and now I’ve done it,” said Sheets. “That was good times.”

On race day, Sheets and some friends stopped by the Toyota display area in the speedway’s new Fan Zone where fans were competing to be the fastest to put decals on a Toyota Camry. Sheets had one of the fastest times and was invited to compete in the contest quarter-finals. In each round, he moved on, until the final competition, held on the frontstretch grass during the pre-race ceremonies for the Bank of America 500.

In the final round, shown live on the world’s largest HDTV, Sheets blew away his competitor with a lightning-fast time and won the brand new Camry.

Yesterday, Charlotte radio personality Rob Tanner with WSOC-FM 103.7, presented Sheets with the keys during a ceremony in Victory Circle.

“It was a surreal day. I wasn’t expecting any of it,” said Sheets. “Before this, winning 100 bucks on a scratch off is the best I’ve done. This is insane.”
