Luke Elementary School students participated in a STEM education field trip they won’t soon forget on Wednesday at Phoenix Raceway. In partnership with The Larry Fitzgerald Foundation, Phoenix Raceway hosted a Beyond the Finish Line STEM education field trip where children learned about the science, technology, engineering and mathematics involved in NASCAR racing.
Philanthropist, business owner, investor, and former NFL wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald Jr. joined Phoenix Raceway President Latasha Causey, and The Larry Fitzgerald Foundation Executive Director Danielle Frost, for this incredible day of fun and learning at the Home of NASCAR Championship Weekend. Students participated in four interactive activities that broadened their understanding of the STEM of NASCAR racing, including:
DRAG: Students experimented with the shape and aerodynamics of cars by adding various elements to adjust the car's shape to see how this impacts speed. They also used hair dryers to simulate how wind and airflow impacts racing.
FRICTION: Using RC cars, students drove on various surfaces (tile, carpet, and turf) to see how surface friction impacts a race car's speed.
SIMULATION: Students drove one of Phoenix Raceway’s race simulators to experience what it is like to get behind the wheel of a race car.
CONSTRUCTION: Using supplies and basic engineering concepts, students built their own race cars. Through experimentation, they adjusted their designs to enhance speed and performance.
“It is nothing short of an honor to partner with The Larry Fitzgerald Foundation to make this event a reality,” said Phoenix Raceway President Latasha Causey. “Utilizing our racetrack and our sport to enrich the education of children throughout The Valley aligns with our vision to make Phoenix Raceway a fully integrated participant in the wellbeing of our community.”
“The amount of science, technology, engineering and mathematics involved in NASCAR is staggering,” said Larry Fitzgerald Foundation Founder Larry Fitzgerald Jr. “I hope the experience these kids had today will open up their minds to creatively apply what they are learning in the classroom and to the world that is around them.”
NASCAR returns to Phoenix Raceway Nov. 8-10 for NASCAR Championship Weekend. It will feature four championship races over three days. Then on Sunday, Nov. 10, the 2024 NASCAR season comes to a thrilling conclusion in the NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race as the sport’s top drivers battle for the Bill France Cup.
