Buddy Kofoid led all 30 laps to win Tuesday night’s 30-lap Warren CAT Qualifying Night feature at the 38th annual Chili Bowl Nationals and advance directly to Saturday’s A Main feature event. The win is the second straight for a Keith Kunz Motorsports (KKM) Toyota driver after Tanner Carrick won Monday night’s opener.
Tonight’s win marks the second preliminary night win for Kofoid in his last Chili Bowls after winning Tuesday night in 2022. He also appeared to be on the way to winning the 2023 Tuesday preliminary after pulling out to a comfortable lead only to have his night come to a sudden end when two cars got together in front of him, leaving him with no place to go. He would hit the wall, ending his night. He was eventually scored 20th.
Starting from the pole, Kofoid got a great start quickly pulling away from the field. From there on, only lapped traffic could slow his run, but he would work his way through the traffic with 10 laps remaining and go on to take his 44th national midget feature victory with KKM and Toyota.
Two more Toyota-powered drivers advanced to tonight’s A Main with Parker Price Miller finishing 12th, while Nick Drake placed 19th.
This year’s Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals features 374 entries – each fighting for one of the 24 openings in Saturday night’s “A Main” feature event. Qualifying continues for each of the next three nights.
