Tanner Carrick overtook Keith Kunz Motorsports (KKM) Toyota teammate Cannon McIntosh with 16 laps to go and never gave up the lead to win the 30-lap Cummins Qualifying Night and advance directly to Saturday’s A Main feature at the 38th annual Chili Bowl Nationals presented by NOS.
The victory is the second Monday night Chili Bowl preliminary night triumph in the last three years for Carrick. It’s his seventh career national midget feature win with KKM and Toyota.
Starting from the pole, McIntosh went straight to the front and led the first 14 laps before Carrick was able to slide underneath him for the lead. A late race caution bunched the field with four laps remaining, but Carrick was able to hold off a hard-charging Shane Golobic for the victory.
Overall, Toyota-powered drivers earned five top-10 finishing positions as Chris Windom placed fifth, McIntosh came home in sixth, Trey Marcham was seventh and Gary Taylor finished tenth.
In addition to his sixth place showing in the A Main, McIntosh also earned a third-place finish in the Race of Champions event held earlier in the evening.
This year’s Chili Bowl Nationals features 370 entries – each fighting for one of the 24 openings in Saturday night’s “A Main” feature event. Qualifying continues for each of the next four nights with six more Toyota-powered drivers expected to attempt to qualify on Tuesday, led by two-time USAC National Midget champion Buddy Kofoid.
