Venturini Motorsports New Smyrna Speedway Post Race Report

Race Highlights:

·     The Skip’s Western Outfitter’s 175 at New Smyrna Speedway was the season opener for the ARCA Menards Series East (ARCAE).

·     Venturini Motorsports (VMS) fielded two Toyota Camry’s: No. 20 Corey Heim and No. 25 Mason Diaz.

·     Sunday (February 9th) the team participated in an open test session at the track. Mason Diaz paced the group with the third fastest time with Corey Heim fourth.

·     During Monday’s lone practice session, the team focused on tire management for most of the allotted time. Heim was third fastest with Diaz in fourth.

·     Posting a fast time of 18.802 in qualifying, Heim qualified 5thwith Diaz posting a time of 18.944 seconds placing him 10th

·     During the relatively uneventful first half of the race, Heim and Diaz utilized track position and fresh tires from a lap- 64 caution to find themselves running second and third. Tides began to change on lap-88 when Heim suffered a blown right front tire while running second. Able to keep his car off the wall, his sway bar arm was terminally damaged, causing him to fight handling issues the rest of the evening. Diaz would spend the next 60-plus laps inside the top-three, staying in sight of the leaders. Mele ensued on lap 154 when a competitor sent Diaz and the No. 17 car hard into the front stretch wall, causing heavy damage to both cars and the track fence. After attempting to fix the damage, Diaz was forced to the garage area early.

·     Corey Heim brought home his No. 20 Craftsman, Champion Power Equipment Toyota Camry seventh. Mason Diaz was relegated to a 17thplace finish with his No. 25 Solid Rock Carriers Toyota Camry.

“We had such a good Venturini Motorsports Toyota Camry at New Smyrna Speedway this week. Started fifth, worked our way up to second pretty quick and felt like we had the car to beat. Unfortunately, there were some things we couldn’t control and the tire going down and breaking the sway bar arm was one of them. Regardless everyone knew we were there, and we will be back even stronger at Five Flags Speedway.”

“This weekend had a lot of ups and downs, but my Venturini Motorsports team never gave up. My Toyota Camry was fast, and we were able to break into the top-three and chase the leaders for a big portion of the race. At the end of the day we can’t control other drivers’ decisions on the track and unfortunately that ended our day early. We’ll put this behind us and keep fighting as we move forward. I want to thank all of my team guys for their hard work and dedication and to all of my sponsors, Solid Rock Carriers, Prince William Marina and Craftsman.”
