What started out looking like it was going to be a good night for Brody Roa in USAC/CRA competition last Saturday night at the Bakersfield Speedway, ended up being anything but that after a tangle knocked him out of the 30-lap main event. With that disappointment already behind them, the B.R. Performance team is getting prepared in on this week’s USAC Southwest Series race at the Central Arizona Speedway.
Seventeen cars showed up for the only appearance of the USAC/CRA Series at Bakersfield in 2019. Roa, 28, was the 15th car to take laps in qualifying and timed in fourth fastest with a lap of 12.783. That put him on the inside of the third row for the second 10-lap heat race. He advanced to the third spot by the end of the second circuit and stayed there for the duration.
For the 30-lap main event on the track billed as “The West’s Fastest 1/3 Mile High Banked Clay Oval,” the Garden Grove, California driver began in the fourth spot. As the field raced off turn two on the first lap, Roa steered his bright green sprint car into second and set his sights on the leader.
Roa was still in second on the third time around the track known as the “Okie Bowl” when disaster struck. As he went into turn three, the car just behind him got into him and then landed on top of the front end of his #91R. Another car, with nowhere to go, also made contact with the left side of his car.
The tangle brought out a yellow flag and Roa’s damaged car needed assistance to get back to the pits. The crew swarmed on the car and repaired as much damage as they could. The veteran driver was able to get back into the race, but by the time he did, he was three laps down. After a few more laps, he pulled the battered car to the infield and called it a night with a frustrating 14th place finish.
Due to that finish, Roa finds himself in second place in the USAC/CRA standings. Heading into the annual “Salute to Indy” on May 25th, he is 20-points off the top spot in the series.
With the Bakersfield disappointment in the rear-view mirror, the B.R. Performance team is getting the car repaired for this Saturday’s Southwest Series “Hank Arnold Memorial” at the Central Arizona Speedway in Casa Grande. The last time they competed at the track on March 2nd, they finished third in the main. Going into the race, Roa has a 19-point advantage over the second-place driver in the Southwest series.
For fans who would like to attend this Saturday’s race, the spectator gates will open at 5:00 P.M. and the first race will be at 7:00.
